First off:  I want to apologize for my number of threads recently, and I want to thank everyone that replied.  I am a "details" and "research" type of guy.  I can't make any major purchase without researching it first.  That's just how I'm wired.

The big brown Santa sleigh delivered this to me Saturday.  I found it on the TCA x-change.  A very nice gentleman pre-ordered it with the intention of redoing his layout so it could fit.   After a few years of realizing that wasn't going to happen, he decided to sell it.

When I started looking for one of these:  In a perfect world, I wanted 4012.  I grew up near Scranton, PA where 4012 resides at Steamtown.  I had my hands on her last year.

4012 is what this gentleman had.  It was still sealed in its factory shipping box.

I didn't pre-order one of these back in 2013 because it wouldn't fit on my layout.  I recently joined an O-Gauge club.  As I was helping set-up their large modular layout the thought came to me, "I could run a Big Boy on here!"  So, my quest began.  I also want to be able to watch and hear it run at home so my next project is building a roller display.  I hope to have that done in a few days.

I want to thank everyone again for replying to all my questions.

UPS's shipping box.

Congrats, Rick. I purchased a 4012 when they came out and have loved it since. Wait till you hear the whistle. In general, I don’t use smoke in my engines, but I did try the main steam and whistle steam on the Big Boy and it looked spectacular. And I would strongly second MED’s caution on the overhang - even on O-72 and O-84 curves, the front of the boiler swings pretty wide of the track. In addition to the items he suggested to look at, I would add check clearance on trains running on close, adjacent tracks.

Enjoy.

A truly great engine, arguably Lionels finest hour. I use my #4004 as a "minesweeper" on the 072 corners of our trainshow modular layout. The trainshow crowds love it and many folks come back and ask when it will next be running. Enjoy!

Happened to me twice at our show this year.   I didn't take to our show in august and people asked where it was lol.

Still nothing yet from Rick.  He may be still in bed with that Big Boy...

There is a first time for everything!

I'm working on my roller display track.. I can't run it in the house without it.

You can tell I'm a Cobra Kai guy!

I am running Unscented Lionel Premium SF.  Yes.  It's unscented.  But it's not odorless.  Not bad, but . . .

What does the Lionel Premium Pine smell like in these?  Does it have a nice pine tree smell?  Or does it have the odor of the Unscented, with a hint of pine added?  Does the Pine smoke as well?

Also, our club layout has the Cab-1L Legacy.

Will I be able to run this engine on that layout using my Cab-2 remote?  And, will I have all the features I have at home?

The pine scented Lionel Premium fluid is OK but just IMHO not as good a scent as either MTH Christmas Pine or Megasteam's version of the same. However I have never put either of the alternatives in my VLBB because it works fine with the Lionel fluid and that's what's recommended for it.

There is no difference in smoke output using the scented Lionel Premium.

I can't answer from personal experience your question about using the CAB-2 on a layout that has a CAB-1L setup but I believe that unless you have the CAB-2 base station connected to the layout in place of the CAB-1L base the answer is no. Using the CAB-1L will give you access to the basic features of the engine but not everything. The VLBB manual makes it clear that with a CAB-1L you get access to "reduced" features (page 4) and I think that this means only those you can access via TMCC rather than Legacy control (pages 24-25).
