It's so bad it's good. It looks like JC Pennys wanted something different and Lionel had a junior do the art work. Don

It should also have a display wood base with GG track and plaque attached. An acrylic plastic cover goes over everything. AFAIK, all the JCPenny engines (except the infamous Santa Fe GP?) came with these extras.

I believe it was made in 1982.
I remember seeing this in JC Penny in the early '80s. I was out of school long enough that I could afford a few luxuries again, had my first house, and one kid with another coming. I was thinking about getting my first Dad-didn't buy-it model train set. I looked at this and thought about it for several weeks, but I didn't (still don't) really like electric and didn't want to build the catenary and all on my first layout, so I ended up buying a steam set instead.
I think its an attractive paint scheme myself.
