These are the only pics a friend has of the Lionel train he had as a child. That train later went to relatives and vanished. He has since been primarily an HO modeler and doesn't remember any details of the Lionel train, but I'm curious to know what set it might have been. Maybe someone here can make a quick ID on it?

It looka likw an 027 set. If you about what year, you could research old catalogues for a set with those cars. I'm thinking the generic 2-6-4 loco but the photo it not clear. The cars are pretty clear however, and the gon with the barrels might be a good clue.
This might be it, from 1951:
Lionel Train Set 1481WS O27 Gauge
5 Car Freight Set with Smoke, Whistle and Magne-traction
1 - 2035 Locomotive with Smoke
1 - 6466W Tender with Built-in Whistle
1 - 3464 Remote Control Operating Box Car
1 - 3472 Operating Milk Car and Platform
1 - 6465 Double Domed "Sunoco" Oil Car
1 - 6462 Super Length Gondola with Barrels
1 - 6357 Illuminated Southern Pacific Caboose
8 - 1013 Curved Track
7 - 1018 Straight Track
1 - 6019 Remote Control Track
1 - 1033 90-watt Transformer
From what I saw in the picture, it looks like the 1477S set. The boxcar is the give away, it looks like a Baby Ruth Car, which means that is probably a 2026 Locomotive. And the date of 1951.
I think Zach is right about a 1463 set. The additional boxcar might be an operating 3472 milk car, seeing there is a remote control track. The 6472 is a non-operating version of the milk car, which looks very similar? There are at least 10 pieces of straight track, more than a usual O27 set, which suggests the remote control track was an addition, maybe with a milk car (but a platform for it doesn't appear). I can't see enough detail in the photos to tell a 2035 from a 2026; they were both 2-6-4 locos with 6466 tenders available in 1951.
The 1481 set would also include a 3464 operating box car, which doesn't appear in the photo. The 1477 set would have had a shorter 6012 gondola. It looks like a 1463 set with a 3472 or 6472 car and remote control track added.

Is that toy X-2 plane in the center?

I'd agree it seems the white car is a operating milk car due to the unloading/uncoupling track and lack of other operating cars.
Nice set, looks like something is under the straights in the upper part. Where did the Bell X-2 go, seems he is working the throttle!
I think most of the sets came with an uncoupling/unloading track and if it was an operating car the platform should be in the picture. Its not a 2035 set as none came with a milk car operating or not. The 2035 sets had at least 4 cars not including the tender. My first and only train set was a 2035 with 4 cars, hopper, gondola, tank car and caboose. I was given an operating cattle car in addition at the same time.
I would go with a 2026 engine. It had a center mounted headlight while a 2035 has a high mounted headlight and has a chunkier appearance.

As Zach said, the white car must be the 6472 non-operating milk/refrigerator car due to the two lines of text on the left. Even though the lettering can't be read, no other Lionel car has that arrangement of graphics. It was probably purchased as an add-on to the 1463W set that Ace pictured.
As Norton said, the operating track was included in sets and used for uncoupling. It does not necessarily indicate the presence of an operating car.
