We have Premier, Legacy and Vision products. But decided it might be more practical to get more rugged and less expensive trains for my 10 year old twin sons. They are generally responsible kids but often like to race trains at top speed and let the loads go on inclines. Was thinking about the MTH r-t-r rugged rails sets (though I don't need track or transformer) because of the value proposition. They come fully equipped with PS2.0 (or PS3.0 - for the newer sets) so we can run them on the layout we're building using DCs. MTH came out with SD70 r-t-r sets in 2011 (PS2.0) and they seem like a bargain - an Imperial locomotive and three double stack freight cars for under $400. But I have no experience with these sets. Anyone have experience with these sets or have any other recommendations instead? We like both MTH and Lionel. Greatly appreciated.

I have both the 2011 UP (PS2) and the 2012 BNSF (PS3) sets. They are both very nice sets and you are correct they are an excellent value. The RailKing Imperial engines are very nice, pretty close to Premier only a tad smaller. All the features of the Premier engines as well. I would not hesitate to recommend one of these sets or get another one myself if they produce another one that I want. I have had no problems at all with either set. I no longer use the track and have purchased bigger power supplies (PH-180's), but I am still using one of the Z500's to power my DCS TIU. You can always sell the track and remote commanders and whatever else you don't use here in the for sale forum.
The Imperial SD70 sets are some of the best bargains out there. The engine alone retails for almost the same as the entire set. I bought the BNSF stack set in November 2010 and sold it sometime last year or earlier this year and I kind of regret it. What a sweet train set. The only issue was the earlier versions had some issues with the paint failing over time and cracking and coming off and I recall MTH recalling and/or fixing out of warranty all affected sets (mine was one of them and the engine was replaced promptly by MTH at no charge despite being a year + out of warranty. ). The new ones should be even better with PS3
This is good feedback - thanks!
