I doubt it; perhaps they did do a 2-8-2 "Mikado"...

On Worthpoint.com found a Southern with same detail as I have called Sunset Models USRA LIGHT 2 8 2 & tender also in body of auction it is called KTM 464 Southern 4501. I believe this is what I have. thank you for all your help
Huh?
Yeah - what? KTM was a Japanese builder, then morphed into something like Kohs in the 1980s. I don't think they ever built for Sunset.
KTM morphed into KTM/USA back in the mid 80's and produced a few remarkable models, including a UP FEF-3 and some freight cars (gondola, stock, flatcar). I think they might have done a few other locos, but not sure,
KTM/USA only did direct sales to end users (bypassing dealers) and had an office in Gardena, CA for a few years, before they gave up on brass train models and went into manufacturing brass musical instruments. During this period they also built a special run of FEF-3's for Brass Locomotive Company (BLCO), for road number 844.
The mid 80s was a period when Japanese models became too expensive for most importers of the day and OMI, KEY and others moved to Korea, where wages were still low. We've now seen the switch from Korea to China for the same reason.

I have never seen a KTM USRA Mikado.
All the KTM locos I have seen after the Max Grey era, have a diecast gearbox with "KTM" cast in. They also all have a plate with a serial number on the bottom of the frame. The gearbox in the photos of the Southern unit does not look like a KTM gearbox. It looks smaller and made from different materials. My guess is the Ebay poster or Worthpoint does not have the correct information.
there is some possibility that someone kitbashed a KTM mechanism from their UP 2-8-0 or PRR Mikado. USH imported a few runs of the PRR Mikado using KTM.
Yeah, it's not KTM. I have some of the gearboxes, shown in the photo, that I removed from models. To me, they look like knockoffs of the KTM box. There were a couple of iterations from KTM.
The axle retainer plates are not blackened either.
If I had to guess, I'd say early Sunset. Having said that, I've seen later Westside with similar parts but I think they were Korean. Also seem to remember Weaver having something like this (Southern Cresent paint).
Doesn't look like factory paint...individual decal numbers.
Gary Yoesle would know if it's a early Sunset.

Darn... I hopped in here thinking I would learn/see more about stuff like this:
Only to realize this thread is about KTM (like the motorcycle)... and not KMT.
Silly brain.

All I can say is the pictures of the southern in worthpoint appear to be as close to what I have seen so far. Like any forum everybody has a opinion but not exactly what I have. kitbashed? decal numbers? No body knows for sure. I have heard Sunset, Weaver, Overland, Hines, KTM the list goes on. I appreciate all opinions and confused as ever. Paint job is pro for sure and detail super this I do know. respect to all Roy
