Here's the inside workings on an ecosmart bulb that I was buying. They don't seem to last as long as I had expected. They fail after a year or two?

I have to do some testing. I believe the SMDs are spent? Maybe I didn't get the proper voltage to them.

So if this was a 40W or 60W "equivalent" lamp bulb and there are only 5 LEDs in there, those LEDs are not the standard type used in our trains or buildings.  Those put out over 10x the light output of the "20 mA white LEDs" discussed here.  I'm guessing those LEDs are wired in series...in which case if one LED went out then the bulb goes dark so you might be able to re-purpose 4.  Not sure what you'd use them for in a train since they are so bright (requiring about 1 Watt of DC power).  I'm thinking the circuit board took a dump and you have 5 usable LEDs.

Thats how they work..i use the 60w daylight at my service bench. Amazon has 100w equivalents. They have been in my cart for a while.

Good thought.  Don't throw away that bulb base before picking off the product number and  "lot code" printed on it.  For failed Ecosmart bulbs I've bought at Home Depot you enter that info on the warranty website and in a few weeks a Home Depot gift card arrives in the mail.  I've never had to mail in the failed bulb or the original receipt.

I had a Cree Bulb fail on me. I contact Cree directly and they mailed me a replacement bulb free of charge without send the failed one back. I have over 30 Cree bulbs in the house and the garage and just one failed bulb in 4 years. I purchased them on flea bay and for the most part I am happy with them. Led have come down in price quite a bit in the last 4 years. I saw Philips LED that where going for $20 four years ago are now $6 a pop at Home Depot.
