I had decided to run some trains tonight after the family went to bed and I pulled out my old MTH Pere Marquette E8a's that have PS1.  I made sure the battery was charged up and put them on the track.  I do have DCS so I was able to easily do a factory reset and they ran ok.

My question is I do not have the instruction book that came with these, and I plan to convert these to PS2 or 3 in the future, but I wanted to hear the station sounds.  They have some great station sounds calling out Detroit and Grand Rapids.  I wanted to hear them but I forgot how to activate them.  Can someone post the PS1 instructions  online somewhere?  I did a google search but could not find them.

BTW it is too bad I cant convert these too PS2 and keep the Station sounds that call out my local cities.

Thanks

Off topic but I have been wondering if there is a way to save those sounds.

Digital Dynamics used to have a board to convert it too TMCC that would use the PS1 sounds but it is long out of production and very hard to find.

To activate PS-1 station sounds, hold the bell button down until a bell (DING) sounds. Then release the button. The locomotive will run normally. Reduce voltage to stop at a station. Keep reducing it until the voltage is off (zero). Turn it on again to 9 or 10 volts. Wait a bit for station sounds to start. A recording of a PA system will announce the arrival of the train. Use the Direction control to cycle through Reverse and Neutral. The locomotive won't move. Different sounds will play. Use the Direction control once more to put the locomotive in Forward. A conductor will call, "All ABOARD!" The whistle/horn will blow twice, the bell will ring, and the locomotive will move forward. If not, increase track voltage until it moves. When the bell stops ringing, the station sounds sequence has ended.

This sequence could also be changed to stop and start in Reverse for diesels or electrics running backward when they are pulling a train.

A pretty good system, in my opinion

I only have PS-1's.... or earlier.   As noted above, the instructions via a manual are available on MTH web site.  Since MTH web site does not always cooperate, and unless you know what you want, that search mission may be time consuming.  If anyone needs a manual with the general process, please send me a message and I can e-mail you a PDF.

Reading Fan did list above all the key steps to activate.

The manual also describes how to activate other sounds, and the couplers.

( Wow, for once I feel like I actually know something!

I would appreciate it if you would send me the PDF.  My email is in my profile

For those that want to keep their PS-1 sounds, the boards do remain available and MTH can even make the chip, so I think they will be running longer then we will.

You could down load the MTH PS-2 upgrade file for you desired engine into one of your active engines and listen to the PFA to see if it uses the same city announcements.  You may get lucky.  G

Are you saying that if you use the variable channel, the PS1 mode will automatically come up on the DCS remote?  How do you get to that menu?

It isn;t quite that simple...  You must create a TIU track on the variable channel and then you control the voltage by scrolling the thumb wheel.

From the DCS manual...

Universal Locomotive & Accessory Operation

Universal Locomotive

Control

Conventional Mode

1. Wire and name tracks according to the

instructions in the Advanced Connection

Section earlier in this chapter and in the

Track Setup section of the Menu chapter.

2. Place a conventional mode locomotive

on the track connected to a Variable channel

of the TIU or to a Fixed channel

being controlled by a Z-4000 remote

receiver.

3. Press the “TR” (track) button, scroll to

the track you want to control, and press

the thumbwheel to select it.

4. Operate your engine according to its

conventional mode operating instructions,

using the DCS remote’s thumbwheel

instead of the transformer to adjust the

locomotive’s speed.

DCS Tip:

To program Proto-Sound 1 engines, select the MPG softkey (S5). Scroll

through the list of programming options and press the thumbwheel to select the

option you want. The DCS system will send the power variations needed to activate

the option, and the engine will respond with the appropriate clinks and clanks.

To set a starting minimum voltage and maximum voltage for tracks connected to the

Variable channels, select the softkey under MTV and scroll to select the starting and

maximum voltages.
