Reading a different article about the boards, I learned a new word:

ferroequinologist. Noun. (plural ferroequinologists) (humorous, nonstandard) A student of ferroequinology; a person who studies trains.

I have always liked that word for its archaic quality.  "Ferro" = iron; "equine" = relating to horses; so it is one who studies the "iron horse".

I enjoyed the article, and the fact that these are being repurposed. I miss that comforting clacking sound they made, however. It meant that things were proceeding forward, unless there was a delayed train, of course..

The article is spot on!  When I used to ride trains on the Northeast Corridor, I wasn't consciously  aware of it but, in retrospect, anticipation is exactly the feeling you get when those boards started to flap!

i have fond memories of the boards in Newark and Baltimore while waiting for the Crescent or Silver Star or Washington for the Afternoon Congressional.

It was just announced that the "flip board" at the Providence RI Amtrak Station will be replaced. The article stated it was one of the last operating ones at a train station in the U.S. Time to get down their with my camera and video and capture the fleeting moment....

This is funny because the current Providence Station is not that old maybe the late 1980's at the earliest. I know the station well I used to run down Wickendon Street to it from my collage dorm to catch the 12:04 Night Owl to my parents house in the DC area every school break.
