I have an engine that I installed cruise, tmcc and sounds in years ago. Sounds are intermittent and screechy sounding. Cuts in and out, mostly out. Is this a speaker problem or some other component in the setup. ERR products if it matters.

If it is intermittent it is most likely a connection or connector, although it could be one of the wires to the speaker.
It could be a lot of things, you just have to start eliminating possibilities.
intermittent might not be the best word. It is mostly no sound with some screechy and distorted sound thrown in. I have checked all the connections to see if anything appears loose. I can't find anything. My next step would be to try a different speaker but alas I have but one speaker. I would prefer not to order one unless I know that is the problem.
It looks like the speaker is an 8 ohm unit. Go to Radio Shack and get an inexpensive 8 ohm hobby speaker and swap out the speaker in your loco. If the sound improves, order a replacement speaker. If it does not improve, chances are the board is bad.

For testing purposes any size 8 ohm speaker will do; even a portable speaker from a stereo system.
