Hey guys I've got a question. I picked up a bunch of old trains for sale on Craigslist the other day. I was mostly interested in the blue locomotive in the middle, which turned out to be an American Flyer "The Royal Blue". well, it turned out to be 3 rail (pickup rollers), which I thought was odd for AF. Anyway, I inspected them later and found that the Royal Blue's wheels are chipped beyond repair. The driving wheels are chewed up, and the trailing and forward trucks aer destroyed. The only good thing is that the engine shell and tender are in acceptable condition. My question is: Should I stuff another motor in the shell (+trailer/forward wheels) and get it shined up?

From the been there done that club, I got a box of prewar American Flyer O "cheap" at an antique show.
I found I need to replace the frame do to broken motor mount, wheels that break if you touch them, front and rear trucks with bad wheels too.
Frame was very weak and soft metal, wheels have to be pressed off and on to move to replacement frame. Valve gear rods are pain to replace. Parts are hard to find and expensive.
I would just wait to find a good complete Royal Blue Engine, that runs next time, rather than trying to save a basket case model.
Prewar 3/16 AF wheels for that loco are not available to my knowledge, so that probably makes the decision easier. Sell them on ebay, someone will pay well for the shell.
It is time to ask yourself a question. "How serious am I about the hobby?". If you plan to collect AF you may want to keep the parts. Who knows, you might just need a part down the road. I have parts that I've bought back to the sixties. A true hobbiest will always keep parts, "just in case". I've been there and done that. And I'm still buying parts, "just in case". Just a thought.
Thanks for the input guys! Like Pappy said, i'll keep them in case i ever need them someday. The Marx pieces that came with it however I will try to restore. They're in a good condition. Need to test the motor.
