Recently purchased at auction an unboxed New Hope and Ivyland boxcar similar to one pictured below, but dark olive green with pale dark yellow lettering and without any identifying paperwork or markings on undercarriage but advertised as KMT. Magnetic auto-couplers are undersized compared to the couplers on Atlas, Lionel, or MTH boxcar trucks. Wondering if this is actually a 2-rail boxcar rather than 3-rail.

Any info on date of manufacture or other details appreciated including whether this really is from KMT.

I couldn’t open the attachment either but Kris did make at least 3 different versions of a New Hope & Ivyland box car and here is a link to one of them on Forum member Robertstrains.com website: Click here: Kris Other Road Name Boxcars II

This one has the Kris Model Trains version of the AMT-style trucks with the “Lifta-matic” couplers which doesn’t sound like the couplers that you have.  But Kris often sold cars without trucks and couplers primarily for 2-rail O scale hobbyists.

Colorwise, what are the three variations and where would my dark olive green with pale dark yellow lettering fit?

After AMT and KMT manufactured these boxcars, Andy Kriswaulis acquired the tooling and made lots of cars. I'm certain that some of the CHOO-CHOO BARN boxcars displayed by the yard and house on fire there are his. He made cars in short runs, and they varied. Every CHOO-CHOO BARN boxcar or reefer (a plug door) has slightly different graphics. Generally, the type face (stamped lettering) remained the same but it was applied in different places. Body colors varied, too, though most CHOO-CHOO BARN cars were yellow. The number - 1616 - is the house number of the now-defunct train store in Allentown (north of the fairgrounds) where these cars were sold.

Boxcars 001

Another manufacturer that used the same tooling was Precision Valley Products / Newbraugh Brothers Toys (PVP / NBT) in West Virginia (I think). As time went by, graphics became much more sophisticated. Here is a PVP / NBT boxcar made in 1990, one of a series of freight cars made for Schuylkill Haven Borough Day. A passenger set of K-Line streamliners and FA units was also made.

Boxcars 002

Boxcars 003

Sometimes PVP or NBT was cast into the tiny board to the right of the ladder on one end of the car. But, like the NH&I car, neither of these cars has a manufacturer's mark.

The two box car variations listed in the Greenberg Guide to Kusan Trains book (which also covers Kris) are a #742 green car with white lettering and a #800912 black car with yellow lettering.  If yours is Kris yours is variation #4.  Can you try posting a picture again?

Seymour Knight of PVP decorated many Kris cars but that Schuykill Haven box car was decorated by Frank Rash of Frank's Roundhouse in Wilkes-Barre.  I have that car, too.

And go Steelers!
