I've had this Burgess charger since the late 1970s or so, it says it is for Ni-Cads and carbon zinc. For Ni-cad 9 volts it says to charge for 3 hours maximum. I purchased 2 new MTH Ni-cads recently - the green ones, and need to charge them prior to installation in PS2.0 engines. Am confused because MTH engine instructions say to charge overnight. Note some of my PS2.0 engines have charging jack - and I can charge the new batteries after installation, but some are older and don't have the charging port, so I will need to use either existing charger (if its acceptable) or find one that MTH recommends.

Thanks.

Personally I would use an MTH recommended charger. MTH says in their instructions to leave the new battery on charge for about 14 hours.

The charger you have a photo of may charge at too high a rate of charge and cause the battery to leak or swell. Even if it means spending a few extra dollars I would try to use the method that MTH recommends.

I'd use a charger that's designed for NiMh charging.  In truth, the MTH charger is just an "always on" trickle charger, it doesn't sense when the battery is fully charged and stop charging.  The MTH instructions for the charger indicate it's not going to shut itself off when the battery if fully charged.  I have several chargers, for the 9V NiMh batteries, I have the ChargeIt Battery Station Pro that knows when to turn off the charge.

Battery Charger - Nicad, Alkaline, 9V, AA, AAA, D, C

There are many choices, but you want one that evaluates the charge and shuts it off when the battery is fully charged.  Tenergy makes a bunch of chargers, I have one of theirs that will charge up to 8 AA and/or AAA batteries in any combination.  It's the Tenergy TN145 8-Bay AA/AAA Charger, makes it easy to keep up with my rechargeable batteries.  The Tenergy TN141 2-Bay 9V Charger is a good choice for the 9V batteries, inexpensive and compact.

Just following up on chargers...I used my MTH charger that only works with PS2 engines with plug ports, and it is a trickle charger rated at 10.5 VDC at 11 mAmps. I charged a brand new MTH Ni-MH battery in a PS2.0 trolley for the recommended time of 16 hours using the trickle charger - and the trolley will not be recognized by the DCS remote. Don't know what's going on. I still have to get another charger to charge batteries in my older PS2.0 engines that don't have the port - the one recommend above continues to be out of stock.
