I pulled this RR Signal out of my stuff that I bought from ebay many years ago and never used. I’m waiting for a crossing arm that I ordered and thought I would test my track connections out with this, but was shocked at the size of this.

It is just enormous and I definitely will not be using it on my display, but now I’m worried about the Lionel O 6-12714 Automatic Crossing Gate I just ordered. Is my Crossing Gate going to be this large?

Thanks, I'm a little disapointed now that I see it and hope the crossing gates will not be so bad. I will probably give this signal to my daughter to use on her G scale Christmas layout.

A lot of the accessories were designed around Lionel Standard Gauge even though they were listed in O gauge catalogs. Some good scale signals are:

  • 30-11010 Highway Crossing Signal (older style buck & cantilever with lights on one side)
  • 30-11006 Highway Crossing Signal (modern style buck & cantilever with lights on both sides)
  • 30-11014 Crossing Signal with Sound ("mid" style buck with lights on both sides. Sold as a pair).
  • 30-11012 Grossing Gate with signals

Z-Stuff (sold in pairs):

  • Wigwag w/sound
  • Flasher w/sound
  • Flasher w/gates&sound

Thats a "classic" postwar style O guage signal. Its extremely oversized but thats how they were. Folks back then weren't concerned with correct scale porportions. It was more about the "play value"

Lionel offers these which are correct scale. 14098 Mailine auto crossing gate.

These are 4"x4&1/2"

As well as the ones mentioned above, basically the same thing with integrated fastrack., 12062:

And 12052:

Thanks Ralph, my crossing gate is supposed to come in tomorrow and I guess I'll see

Night "quite" as big, but still double the height and width. Clicking on the "features" in the online description gives the dimension:

You know when I first started the Christmas train back in 2000, I had an HO train along with my wife’s collection of porcelain houses. The HO set was a huge pain in the butt with constant fiddling and it never worked when I had people over. I was about to give up on having a train altogether when one of my friends started giving me a bad time about the scale of things.

I then went to the local hobby store and saw a Lionel Christmas train on sale. I thought that would be pretty close to my wife’s porcelain houses scale and bought it. It wasn’t perfect, but so much better than the HO plus it had the added benefit of not having to fool with it constantly to keep it running.

I was just so hooked on O-scale that I bought 3 more train sets along with all the train car extension sets. Now I’m just getting into the accessories and I would like them to be as close to scale as I can although I do understand it’s not going to be perfect.

Hi Matt, I just saw a short YouTube video of the MTH 30-11012 Crossing and I wish now I would bought those instead. I just can't wait till my Lionel gate comes in tomorrow.

I received my crossing gate today and just now pulled it out of the box. OMG i just can't believe how big it is.

There is no way I can use this on my layout and I'm not even going to break the seal on the box. I hope I can return this.  This is one of those problems of buying things on the internet without actually touching it.

Can anybody give me the dimensions of the MTH 30-11012 Operating Crossing Gate Signal?

I just need the length of the arms and the height of the end piece whatever that is called. Also I plan on recessing the box thing below the stand so I only need the top height.

I’m just afraid to order it and have it being too large like the Lionel crossing gate.

Hi Guys I just wanted to thank you again for your recommendation.

I finally got up the nerve to order another gate grossing after that Lionel experience and it came in today.

I bought the MTH 30-11012 Operating Crossing Gate Signal and it's perfect. I'm very happy with the scale. I also bought a relay and full wave bridge from Radio shack to operate it, but that hasn't come in yet. I can't wait to see this working on my layout.
