Hello,

I'm looking at some of the lionel aluminum 18 inch passenger cars (from 2005). I know that these vintage of passenger cars have the tendency to have zinc rot on the trucks, couplers, and underframe.

Looking that these in particular, and few have some hair line cracks on the trucks side frames, they are not all the way through the casting, but I'm wondering if this is a superficial issue, or the start of zinc rot.

Thanks and I hope you all had a great holiday season!

Miller

From what I've seen. Only the Canadian Pacific 18" pass cars trucks had zinc pest issue.

The later "Shasta Daylight" cars from 2011-ish also had terrible truck zinc pest issues, as well as many of the Santa Fe variants.  The earlier 2005 Daylight trucks seem to be fine from what I've seen, although some of the metal roof details will occasionally exhibit the issue.
