This question is a matter of how fast the trains are going. On a mainline they would have to be farther back then in the yard where the trains will be generally moving slow. If you have a place on your layout where you can change the track around you could add and isolated section of outside rail right next to the switch and see how it does in a test. On a faster track move it back one section of track at a time. When you arrive at a length you like then use that length on the rest of the switches. On how long the rail has to be that depends on the track system you are using. A short piece may be adequate but the track may be hold on the ties. I think 4 or 5 inches would be Ok on Atlas track. Not sure on others.
