My Dad worked at GATX for 27 years in Masury Ohio. So trying to scratch build plant 1. The mill is too big for my small layout so I had to scale it down. Gatx plant one had 8 tracks in it and a small transfer table in it. He worked the inside blast until it closed in 1984.

Nice work!
But what do you mean by Blast? And if you are referring to a foundry or some other hot metal work what did they bring into the mill in that tank car?
They manufacturer tank cars.He worked the inside the tank cars, inside shot blast.
Trinity has a facility in Oklahoma City where they also make tank cars. It looks very similar to the photo of the prototype that you posted.
It appears that it is "feast or famine" at Trinty...when they have a contract, you can see "help wanted" signs along with tank cars in various stages of construction waiting their turn in the paint shop or in the fabrication area, etc. Next time you drive by, you see the finished cars sitting, waiting for pick up. And then you see signs "not hiring" and empty parking lots and empty tracks in the facility.
I have seen them working on flat bed commercial truck trailer frames and other "non rail" projects over the year I have paid attention.
I live outside OKC so I only get down every few weeks...I suspect GATX is/was similar.
Anyway...
I like your model. It captures the feeling quite well. Looks good and should be a major component and land mark of your layout. "Well done".
Tom,
That looks great. I can't wait to see it with the corrugated sheets.

Tom nice job------------We used to have a Trinity car facility here in Greenville at the old former Steel Car,buildings all torn down, tracks all pulled out, nothing left now but concrete slabs&weeds. Chet
Tom,
That is very cool. Really nice work. I like the roof ribbing and the excellent exterior weathering you did. Looks truly industrial.
My late father-in-law worked at GATX in Masury, OH. I believe he retired in 1980. He was a machinist and very skilled - a real craftsman. The man could make or fix anything.

Very nice work. Hope you will do the other buildings at the facility.
Tom,
That looks great, and the weathering is super.

Tom, nice way of incorporating the theme. BTW, did you repaint any of the tank cars? If so, what was your process? Did you strip the old paint off? What type of paint did you use? Thanks.

On the users side....my dad worked at Stauffer Chem for 30 years til it closed. My uncle at Hooker Chem. I even did a short stint at Occi until they cut back. I saw a lot of different style tank cars growing up. I think that must be why they're still my favorite car.
It's kind of an honor to him, that you built that building. Very nice job.
First off, you did an amazing job! Did you just buy the wood and build it from scratch or start with some sort of kit and do some mix and matching to build? I own about 30 GATX tank cars and I would like to incorporate this in my layout. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
First i made it out of a box to see if it would fit,Then I ripped a lot of wood on the table saw. Then I famed it in. the siding is paper I put through a crimp er I bought at a craft store.Panted it with a air brush . then glued each piece on.Worked on it off and on for six months.
Um...AMAZING!!!! Very nice work. You guys have convinced me to get a crimper and give it a go. Thanks for posting your handy work.
Outstanding Job.
JOE
I looked more closely at your photos and noticed that you have a chain link fence around portions of the complex. That is a cool detail among others.

I like the education I get on here...I dunno what a crimper is, but I am going to find
out...if it has applications for structures, I am interested. Now: about tank cars...
there are books on reefers (which don't contain ALL of the billboard cars that once
ran..I know of two not in those), but I haven't paid attention, didn't think about....
checking out books on tank cars..to see if there are pages and pages of different
lessors/owners' cars that I could use to track down a photo of one I am looking for?
I am talking framed cars of the steam era. I assume there are such books?
I bought some large yellow envelopes at Staples Cut them into 1 in.X 2in . making it a 4x8 sheet of steel in O gauge. Then put it in the crimper.
