June 14, 2014 - Special Event in Conway, AR - BSA Emphasis
Plan on attending an LCCA SPECIAL EVENT for a Train Open House Event in Conway, AR, on Saturday (6-14-14), which is the day immediately before Father's Day. Mike Mottler is now working with a local Scoutmaster, Johnny Davidson, to promote this TOH activity to all Scouts -- Cub scouts, Boy Scouts, Explorer Scouts (ages 7 to 21) -- throughout the Quapaw Council in the central AR area. We hope for a good turnout!
Johnny is also a train hobbyist and a "Friend of CAMRC." He will provide a training course to scouts interested in earning the BSA Merit Badge in Railroading during the upcoming BSA summer camp.
Further, we intend to announce a path to participation in a LCCA/Lionel Modular RR Layout project as an activity that will meet one of the requirements for the BSA merit badge. To my knowledge, only a few LCCA-oriented train clubs work with Scouting organizations along this line. The LCCA has often cited this option for Scouts in The Lion Roars and on the website, and this project in the heartland gives this concept wings.
The LCCA is offering a DOOR PRIZE available to scouts (only) -- the Lionel BSA train set. To qualify to earn/win it, a Scout must appear at the event in uniform, participate in the 10-point RAILROAD QUIZ (which is based on items on the train layouts - like a scavenger hunt for clues) and earn a 100% score. All correct quizzes will be placed in a box and the winning entry will be drawn that day by an Eagle Scout and presented to the Scout and his parents.
On the RR QUIZ sheet, Scouts may indicate an interest in joining the Modular RR Layout project. We hope at least 12 dad/lad teams of scouts will volunteer to build 4 corners and 8 straights with guidance from CAMRC members, some of whom are also LCCA members (and former Scouts).
The BSA train set prize would be a great drawing card and would build a bridge to the Scout organization. See Link for more detail
