K-Line Berkshire (K3670-1407TC) = No Smoke!

Hello!

I have checked everything I can think of to get this thing (K-Line Berkshire K3670-1407TC) smoking again. I replace the smoke element. It was a 20 ohm wire-wound resistor that I replaced with an exact replica. The on/off switch shows the appropriate continuity and there is continuity "after" the PCB board (691-PCB1-0B9) - from switch to smoke unit so I figure I can rule out a broken wire. The positive lead to the smoke unit resistor is insulated. What I am not getting is any voltage (5 v DC?) on the +/- pins of the board when the locomotive is running.

Bad board? Everything else functions perfectly. I would be embarrassed if it is something simple, but I could bear it if I simply missed something obvious !

Voltage to the smoke unit is actually around 12v. This engine has TMCC. Assuming you are running it in command try hitting AUX1 9. You can turn smoke on and off remotely using AUX1 9 for ON and AUX1 8 for OFF.

If still no smoke then the large triac o the R2LC is likely bad. Fortunately those can be replaced individually.

Look for gunrunner's post about what the different triacs do on the R2LC board and what the part number is to order. Be careful on unsoldering the triac. Do not press hard, use good solder wick or a desoldering tool.

After trying out Pete’s suggestions, and you’re 100% sure your wiring and the resistor are good, …try another radio board to confirm the suspicion if you have one handy …..
