Greetings to all this fine Sunday afternoon.  So currently on one of the doors of  my little layout there is a figure eight part that has an older metal 90 degree cross track. A couple of my post war engines just don't like going across it.  Knocks the e unit into neutral and naturally stops the train unless moving at 14  volts on my ZW.  I Love the sound(clickety clack) but run slower, BUZZ stop isn't pretty.  Anyway I have a less primitive brand new K line shadow rail 90 degree cross track that might improve things more. Just one issue, the actual track is shorter on all four corners than the Lionel one. Probably by 1/2 inch. What to do now? I guess I could cut a few straight track pieces to fill the 4 gaps.  But connecting them might be a challenge. Or might I be able to bridge the ends of the short side of cross track to following track with some rail , rest on top of other tubular rails and add some ties?  Any ideas? Is that a feasible idea?  Current Track geometry dictates that in order to do this all I need are four extensions without disturbing the current layout integrity.

anyone do anything like this before?  Short track extensions?

Thanks for any info.

so today I borrowed a hobby saw to make the spatial pieces.

The K line rail has more fortitude than the worn rotary saw blade!

Set it up in the former Lionel 020 cross track space.  Sets up strong and true.

Bye bye old cross track. K line o gage tubular 90  degrees in place.

And the former worse offending engines just glides through!

i guess this success story should take place in what I did on the layout today section. Wow, don't we love it when the daily plan goes better than imagined.

Creative problem solving is just another fun chapter in the hobby.   Well done!

I missed your post here. Good work!

I checked in my software (RR-Track and SCARM). They don't have both Shadow rail and SuperSnap libraries. The Lionel O 90° cross is larger than the K-Line snap track.

Anyway, I like your idea of hiding the solid rail connectors with pieces of the tubular rail. Perhaps a railroad tie of basswood stock would provide long term insurance for the joint.

Improvise and overcome.
