What number Kadee coupler do you gentlemen recommend for the MTH Hi Cube paper boxcars & GP or SD diesels?

The #745 looks ok but never used any so far or installed any, though installation looks easy enough even for my simple mind-a screw on each side in the Kadee coupler mounting holes.

Thanks to all in advance for your help.

The 740 or 745's are the ones to use. On six-axle diesels, you can shave down the back of the coupler box to clear the hi-rail coupler mount on the power trucks. The one locomotive you can't get away with that on is the GP35. The rear coupler needs to be a 743 or 806 short-shank/short box coupler (unless you cut off the mount on the rear power truck (which I choose not to do).

Depending on the engine either 740s or 743. Rolling stock 740/745s. Your going to need to shim on the engines and rolling stock. go to this thread I started and this should help you. Without looking you will need to use the GP9 mounts and follow same procedure as in the SD45. Mario's Kadee mounts are the correct height. There is another forum member who sells Kadee mounts for MTH rolling stock on Shapways too.

I used them on my scratch built cars, Al.  I found that if you have the single mounting screw loose enough to allow the coupler to swing freely, the lip at the front isn't sufficient to hold them in alignment.  It's a simple fix.  I inserted a styrene pin into the rear box hole and glued the end of the pin to the body, so I can remove the box for maintenance.

This sounds like the new Protocraft coupler draft box you're speaking about now.(?) I only seem to need 1 "0-72" screw in the front hole on Atlas 4750s as it seems to be sufficient & since the rear screw doesn't do any good unless a washer were put in to extend over on the draft box- that'd help.

I plan to use all Protocraft type couplers in time but am waiting on an "in the works" single & double shelf coupler for my modern 2016-1990s fleet. Thought I'd put on Kadee's to get a couple diesels up & moving around a few cars instead of waiting on something that's a long way out. Thank you & everyone who's helped me on this subject.

Mike,

I only make these for my railroad or for static models since I can't guarantee the durability of the materials.  I know what I'll need on my layout and the "train forces" as my longest train might be 10 cars for my switching layout.   Some of the draft gear I make will have a direct connection through the coupler shank to the frame of the car but some do not.

You may want to ask Jim Lincoln, I think he wants to start offering commercially available stuff and his is more tailored towards kadees and/or protocrafts.  Im kinda like the introverted modeler ;-).  The reason I went to drawing my own and having them printed in the first place is I just could not build a styrene coupler box and have it look as awesome as I could with the 3D Printing.

Sorry for the delayed reply to your question.
