Hi all, struggling figuring out how to handle modifying Lionel trucks for Kadee clearance. The trucks are found on Lionel's Vision boxcars and potentially other rolling stock.

As you can see, these are the earlier-style metal trucks with a frame that wraps around the wheelset. Mounted to this is a pickup roller and also a wheel motion sensor.

On a normal Lionel freight, I slice these trucks where the arrows point in the photo below. However, with the pickup rollers and sensors, cutting the frame would remove all the mounting points. However, without cutting, the rounded protrusion to which the coupler mounts interferes with the Kadee.

I tried slicing one car in such a way that I hoped it would create enough clearance while leaving enough material to leave the remainder of the frame intact. This works a bit, but reduces the ability of the truck to turn.

I'm wondering if anyone has a solution here I'm just not seeing that provides a full clearance allowing the truck to turn while not requiring a change to the mounting of the sensors/pickup.

Thanks in advance for any help you all can provide.

I was hoping someone had an answer for this project. My idea involves a bit of work and I don’t even know if it would work. Before the new milk car trucks were available. I needed trucks to go under a brass milk car. I needed a lower height and a proper sized mounting hole. I used the top mount as a template. But your project involves a different ride height and you still need to address mounting a pickup roller and sensor board. I’ve used the Atlas caboose truck roller on a few projects. Fairly easy to mount with a couple of screws. You could probably solder up a bracket to mount the sensor. Still a lot of work.

I’m guessing you have tried trimming off the rear mount of the Kadee box.
