Picked up a k3635-7050cc IC Berkshire which looks to have never been run.  Initial power puts engine in forward not neutral.  Engine cycles direction ok,  initially no sound at all.  Opening tender indicated sound board disconnected.  Reconnection gives sound controllable by volume.  Sound activation running conventional off either an mth transformer with sound buttons or a zw with accesory buttons does not control horn and whistle.  Engine chuffs and then usually bell will ring constantly.  At times the thing gets a mind of its own and begins horn whistle at random.

Any ideas on how to get horn and whistle to work controlled in conventional?  Also can these berkshires be factory reset?

Thanks

Ed,

I know that this may seem a little caustic, but all my K line engines eventually the electronics tend to take a dive.

I my latest issue was with a K4 with cruise control. The tell tale was it started doing strange behaviors when I purchased it. the speed steeps were lethargic, and then the r2 sometimes was unresponsive.

Then one day I put it on the track, turned the power on, and Poof! The control board just went up in smoke.

If the reset does not work I would send it to Box Car Bill or Gunrunner John for repair. You may want to upgrade it to ERR boards for a more reliable running.

Thank you all for the help.  Spending some more time with the engine it turns out that the major problem of one of the component boards being unset upon opening the tender made me think that was the only problem.  In fact the presence of a 9volt battery hookup escaped me during the initial inspection (see photos below).  Compounding the problem was the first battery I put in was apparently mostly dead so it was not until a second fresh battery was installed that the engine functioned as designed.  Rookie mistake I admit, so I do appreciate the help.

While the battery harness is evident below, it was tucked under the board and not visible during overly eager first inspection.
