I’d like to see some videos of them too since I’m about a month away from getting one! Dave from Lionel on a Facebook livestream in January showed a production sample with the N&W sounds in it, but he mentioned the western road names and I think even the B&O version have different whistles that the N&W Y3’s have. Really would like to hear those sounds!

If not, there's always Neolube to fix the problem.

True, I saw that solution from the new Ten-Wheeler thread but I'd prefer it correct straight from the factory. Everyone does, of course, but I can't say with certainty that it would like nice and clean when I finished adding the Neolube

Well, it's not green like the catalog art, but the boiler, ugh. What is going on? Hopefully the sounds are right.

The pilot on the engine looks like PRR green; I think the lighting and reflection is causing the main engine body to look different.

It looks like more 2-8-8-2's have arrived at Mr Muffins, including N&W #2020. It too has the dreaded silver smoke box. I will be honest, the silver smoke box looks nice as it reminds me of the 4-8-2 Water Buffalo (N&W K3) that I have, but I am pickier about scale details for my N&W model roster and think I might pass this round.

Does anyone know if the early N&W 2-8-8-2's had silver smoke boxes? I might be convinced to buy then.

There is a 6-11405 Y3 on eBay that shows a darker boiler. So, once again the wrong paint guy is on duty whereas the older versions the right guy was on duty.

I think that Steve Nelson has some that are being weathered and no silver. Give him a call.

It was funny, I clicked on the video and realized it was my son Daniel's video.  He does a nice job with them.  We are thinking of getting the N and W as well and if we do I will have him post a video.  Keep posted on his channel.  FWIW, Dave Olson did a video of the N&W version a bit back on one of his demos with Dave.  You can find all of them on the Lionel facebook page.  The N&W has even more hooter whistle versions than the Rio Grande.

Oh, that is great. I know some time back there was a discussion of disappoint regarding whistles. The subject was about the whistle on the 2-10-4 Texas Pennsylvania version. They gave it I believe a Banshee whistle which most of us spit out our teeth. They should have given it something deeper instead of something for a switcher. Glad to hear this has choices, but it will always be the beast type whistle for me. Just wish they would have done that with the Texas.

Never mind the color of the smokebox!
Personally, I wouldn't touch this thing because of the four, yes count them, 4 air pumps. Two on the front of the boiler and two on the engineer's side under the running board.
It is hard for me to understand how Lionel have done these engines pretty well in the past and now they screw them up royally!

@Big Jim, your guess is as good as any. While I don't know the look of mostly every engine that is out there, I do appreciate when those that do know point these out. I'm glad we get a choice of whistle in this new lot. I was explaining to my brother this morning about the 2-10-4 mishap with the "switcher-like" whistle it has. Told him it would be like a Corvette with a 2 cylinder engine. To quote Monty Python, "It just don't work".

I know that in years past when they first started moving from traditional to scale, there was a bunch of mistakes like the valve gear on the first Mohawk. I don't remember who I asked but they posted what the Baker Valve gear looked like which intrigued me.

I remember also when the newer versions of the N&W Class J's came out and the red color stripe was off from what it should have been. I think someone had said that either there was a time when that off color was right, or that it was closer to what 611 had now(forget which).

With all the offerings and mistakes, miscues, or whatever other issues(clown colored Challenger, yuck), eventually they will get something right. Maybe the font lettering on the tender. I just hope they go back to the original couplers from 6-7 years or so ago without the thumbtacks on them that swivel. The new couplers are a disaster.

I remember when I first saw N&W #2020's smokebox details I thought it was so weird that airpumps were on the smokebox, but I decided I look into it before writing off the model. During my search I discovered that picture of the Y3 you linked, which convinced me that not only were the smokebox pumps and "whitewall" tires prototypical, but so was the shorter tender. I didn't pay attention to the smokebox though. Some Sunset/3rd Rail N&W models have the silver smokebox, so I can accept #2020's silver smokebox as plausible. For the Y3a #2050 though (which I have ordered), I really want to see graphite.

Earlier I just assumed it was a natural result of mass production, but in thinking more about it I think it comes down to maximizing potential order numbers with the minimum number of molds. Use a single chassis and then add different smokebox details for different road names to get the number of orders needed for production. More molds means higher chance things don't get made in a BTO order format. At this point I've accepted that, even at this price point, there will be design imperfections and model inaccuracies. If I want something closer to a museum-grade replica, I can wait for a 3rd Rail model. For me, the extra air pumps where they don't belong is a small detail I can overlook for an otherwise great looking model I don't think gets made too often (and here I'm talking about the early Y3 #2020 with the smokebox airpumps, harkening back to the design of the Y2/Y2a). Where the appearance of the model falls short, the technology and sound make up for it. I realize that the incorrect details are not a small thing for some to overlook though, and for that reason I don't blame someone for not buying it on those merits.

Yup, those. I remember a bunch of people saying the color was way off. I couldn't figure out if it was or not. Having seen 611 up close and taking a bunch of pictures, I thought it was close. Mr. Muffins had Harry Hieke(hope I spelled that right) repaint the stirpes on all he sold if people asked I believe. Since I didn't get one from him and didn't matter to me, mine are still as is. I don't mind.

I’m not much of an expert on Northern Pacific steam, but from some photographs I’ve seen it appears the NP gave at least some of their locomotives a dark silver or grey boiler jacketing. Lots of brass HO models are painted this way and even with this black and white image you can spot the color difference of the boiler with the black cab and tender. Unfortunately Lionel got the boiler color wrong on their NP 2-8-8-2...936B0733-C936-4333-9696-71D15C37A82B
