Odd that you would quote, *I just want to have something to do* by The RAMONES. I actually used to be on their road crew many years ago. I worked merchandise and drum tech. Monte was the tour manager and he was very nice, but he could be tough! I can say with confidence that I believe that they *ThE RAMONES* would absolutely LOVE this model of CBGB's!!! And I believe that Mr. Hilly Kristol would love it too. Both Hilly Kristol and THE RAMONES were very nice people. And yes, I'm actually planning on opening a pUnK MuSiC BaR and package store. And chicken vindaloo will be on the menu. I just hope that my modeling skills are good enough to attempt to build a CBGB's model for the layout that I'm trying to put together.

Thanks Jeff. That's quite a compliment coming from a guy with your background and I'm humbled by it. I'm originally from Forest Hills, so you know how much the Ramones meant to us.  I frequented CBGBs in the late 70s/early 80s and had the pleasure of seeing them perform on multiple occasions.  I'm sure you have some great stories to tell and would love to hear some of your experiences working with the band.  Did you make it into Melnick's book about his experiences on the road with the Ramones? I read it years ago and couldn't stop laughing throughout.  I have to dig that out if i could ever find it again and give it another read. Don't worry about crafting the model. When you're ready to proceed, just start a thread on OGR and I'll send you/post  all the decals and walk you through the build.  In light of your background and the theme of your bar, this would be a must have for you. The hardest part is cutting up the right size plastic bottle I found for the awning template.  After that, its really not too difficult, since the filthy, run down nature of the building allows for lots of modeling mistakes, LOL!

BTW, This guy did a far better job than me on a later version  (and larger scale) of CBGBs after they cleaned the place up a bit (looks late 80s to me), and his work appears  to be for sale. This definitely should grace the walls of your bar (but I'm sure you have a pile of cool memorabilia that you've saved for just such a purpose) - https://boingboing.net/2015/10...-model-of-the-f.html

And MTH and Menards and K-Line and Atlas and Marx and American Flyer ...

Now where have I heard that before?

They had rocks glasses and wine glasses but you could only get letters engraved no numbers or logos.  I'd love to see what a set of rocks glasses would be like but the few places that do printing on them don't have a preview option unless you commit to buy and I really don't need 24 rocks glasses, Zazzle does have cocktail napkins, coasters, hip flasks and Zippo lighters so the club car is not totally out of luck!

BTW, if you really are affiliated with a punkrockpub, just make sure chicken vindaloo is on the bar menu, LOL!

Chicken Vindaloo

Has me wondering what would be on the menu in the dining car on The 48 Express or The 48 Limited or The 48 Unlimited or just The 48 (not sure what the train should be called) should be? I'm thinking a Ceasar salad followed by a 2" Porterhouse or grilled salmon, baked potato with sour cream and chives, asparagus with Hollandaise sauce, green beans with pearl onions and bacon and for dessert maybe Flan.

I know, I have way too much time on my hands.

Wrong, Jerry. That's way too much food. Whatever you serve needs to fit on a cocktail plate. You're running the 48 club here after all, a haven for space challenged three railers everywhere.  I think three pigs in a blanket and a mini egg roll is more fitting.

Johnny Walker, bite your tongue. Who would ever want to model that 2020 store version? Ironic that it would replace CBGBs, since  it represents everything that Punk abhorred.

But I said  DINING CAR , the club car would have the usual bar fare, peanuts, cashews, pretzels and the like. Have to remember this train exists in the 1930s context, I have no idea of how things like that functioned back then but I'm guessing at most you could get at the bar food-wise would be a sandwich of some sort, any real food would be had in the dining car and then only at certain times of the day, I might be wrong on that, any railroad historians care to chime in on what the more elite travelers may have had available to them?

And please, Pigs In A Blanket, Egg Roll ? This is The 48 Club not The Cannonball Express, we do have some standards !

If we allow smoking in the Club car I guarantee there isn't too much on the menu that's healthy !

Coach,

Glad you liked it. The poles and bracket arm and the wire hangers came from Rivers Traction Supply. Jim Rivers is super to work with. The bracket support wires coming from the pole and the wire below the bracket had to be soldered. It was a challenge for me. I certainly got better at installing heat sink clips so part A didn't fall off when installing part B. "Hanging the Overhead" was quite the deal. I read up on the technique from old Traction Magazine articles. What is very interesting is that when going around a curve you must keep the wire to the inside of center. If not disaster. I can tell quite a few stories on my self in this endeavor but don't want to hijack this thread. Maybe we should meet/talk somewhere else. Below is a Labelle kit that kept me going in this aspect of the hobby.

I installed some catenary on a friend's "demonstration and test" layout; it has been in service now for about forty years. The stuff is really quite easy to hang:

John Varvatos went bankrupt?!?!? Now that leaves the possibility of a location for my project. And yes. I would turn back the clock and make the place look like CBGB's did circa 1975!!!! Positively no cleaned up yuppie rubbish!!!! It would be a pUnK MuSiC BaR again!!! GOD willing!!!!

You can’t preview without buying!? That doesn’t sound like a preview at all!

FWIW, that logo would look sweet laser etched in some square crystal rocks glasses.

Kinda like this:

I know, they make you jump thru all kind of hoops and then tell you they will send you a preview after you give them an idea how many you want and give them your contact info. There isn't even a place go upload your logo. Zazzle at least has a page where you can design it and then see what it looks like before you have to make a decision on it. Etsy has tons of vendors but it seems like many of them use the same subcontractors so not much variety there.

Jerry

I'm not sure they would seat us in the dining car, with the guys with the big layouts sprawled at all the tables. ( You know who  you are)

No, we'll be happy in the club are with our drinks and dining on mini-sliders and cocktail franks as befitting our status, but having a great time swapping stories about all the 48s we made in a day and dismantled the next morning.

4AllPromos has rock glasses (but no square ones) and a minimum of 6 but still no preview page and a $50 set up charge to boot, I wish Zazzle offered rocks glasses like the shot and pints. I guess for a set of custom etched glasses that's probably not a bad price but I think we'll stick with things like hats and shirts for now if we do do anything like this.

Well this weeks layout is another O27 design, I never really like the O27 track when I was younger but not that I've got this 48Club thing going I've come to appreciate its usefulness in tight quarters. It's another stretched out layout with several long runs and a double mainline to boot!. She measures 36"x128" so it does utilize an entire sheet of plywood but given the amount of small cuts to use the whole sheet one is probably better off just using 2 sheets and then repurposing the scraps for mountains and tunnels or gussets for the legs.

48425layout48425layoutbase

Track list:

14 - O27 curves

6 - O27 1/2 curves

27 - straights

6 - 1/2 straights

2 - RH switches

2 - LH switches

Cut track:

1 - 6.2"    2 - 5.7"    1 - 7.3"    1 - 3"    1 - 5"    1 - 5.5"    1 - 5.3"   1-3.2'    1- 2.9"

And as usual an RCS can be dropped in anywhere a full length straight is.

RPLST8 good news! Found a company that does rocks glasses that doesn't require a minimum purchase and does let you preview the design before hand, unfortunately just round glasses no laser etched just printed but that leaves the possibility of them being made, about $13 a glass if I get 6 which isn't bad for a custom set of glasses. They will let you order just one but $50 for a glass is a bit much! Here's the page I was on designing a set of rocks glasses for my home bar:

They do require a fairly high resolution so I'm still working on our logos to make them more usable on those sites.

As to the glasses and mugs and hats and shirts it's probably best for anyone who wants one to just deal directly with whoever is making them because  my reshipping them to someone just adds a second shipping cost to the base price and does nothing but delay it for another week or so. I'll make up a set of artwork that is good for Zazzle, Vistaprint and BarProducts so that anyone who wants to get something made I can just send it to you.

The consensus on the cards seems to be the second design so instead of waiting another week to get them made I'm going to make sure they are correct (spelling and what not) and am going to order them tomorrow. Right now I'm going to get 25 of the Charter cards and if enough interest is shown on the Century ones I will get 25 of those but so far I haven't seen too much interest on those, in fact the membership numbers have seemed to plateaued.

Once I have the cards in hand and are satisfied they are OK I'll get the certificates made up, set up my PayPal and then we'll take it from there. If anyone here has set up a PayPal account and has any words of wisdom or secrets to making it easy to deal with I'm all ears since I've never done this.

Jerry, I set up an account a couple of years ago for the bay. It does come in handy for other things from time to time.  You may want to use a bank account and debit/credit card you do not use too much. Easier to keep things straight.

Depending on the state, PayPal may send you a 1099-K which will be reported as income. Illinois is 4 transactions and over $1000 in total. The IRS is $20,000 and over. Yet another reason to escape Illinois. If you don't file business returns there is a way to net this to zero if you did not earn anything on the transactions. Over 60% of what PayPal reported for me as income was shipping and sales tax charged to the buyer.  Take that out and I would have been below the $1000 limit. I use the bay to sell trains and track I no longer want - if I break even I think I did ok.  Just a head up - Jeff

That's just the kind of head aches I was hoping wouldn't rear its ugly head.  At best I'd be hoping for a break even , I'm not looking to make any "profit" on any of this and the PayPal site doesn't make getting info as easy as it should. From what I have read Friends and Family is a good option but it requires both sides of the transaction to have a PayPal account but I haven't gotten that far into my research.

I'll come up with something, could really use one of those rocks glasses right about now!

Jerry

Jerry - except for the 1099, dealing with PayPal has been pretty easy. I do not have "fiends" and family, I presume mine is a regular account. I can send funds to a valid email. simple and easy. Their reporting is pretty good as well. Even moving funds from PP to my bank account was easy, but took 4 to 5 days to show up. I do not know how the recipient "cashes" the PP funds.

The bay cut them out of the loop last year and was supposed to result in savings for sellers. I think they just absorbed the fees and did not pass them along, so to me the bay raised their fees,

The feds are trying to tax every dollar they can, so I do not think anyone else is going to be much better. The vendors are simply complying with the new regulations.

Pay Pal is basically plug and play Jerry. They will ask for a bank account to tie to the account.

All you need to do is share the email address tied to the account and we can pay you through that address. F&F will come up as an option when we pay you.

My wife used to sell on the Bay before they split with PP. They really messed things up the they split the companies.

I dont use it but I've heard Venmo is simple to use. Both seller and payer need to have accts tho. I'd say that most 48 members already have PP accts.

Bob

Jerry, count me in for a 100 Club card whenever you get enough commitments to go ahead with them.  As for the Bay and paypal, my wife and I have been buying and selling for several years (she does far more than me). I'm no business genius and had no trouble learning how to work with their setup. Yes, it's true they keep changing the rules, rarely for the better, but it's still a whole lot better than trying to unload stuff in a yard sale. We are often surprised at what people are willing to pay for something we wrote off as valueless.

I've ordered the cards for the Charter membership and I'm going to probably order cards for the Century Club too that way if anyone in it can get one even tho membership is a bit sparse right now.

I'm not going to be very active for a couple weeks or so on the forums, my dads cancer has taken a turn for the worse and we're dealing with that so that's going to be taking my time right now and honestly my hearts not in The 48 Club right now.

So I will be around just not very active for a while, I may pop in here and there but mostly just to read things.

Jerry

So... I've been 'lurking'  now for a while, wondering if my layout qualified - I know my signature says '5x9' but actually it's a hair over 4' and just a few inches under 9' (I rounded up ) I'd love to be included here. The space the layout is shoehorned into was going to originally be studio space, but changed my mind when the addition was built. I apologize for the clutter in the center - still have to get the waterfront/river area done.

I want to thank everyone for their prayers, unfortunately my dad passed away Monday afternoon at the age of 93. He was always a big fan of trains real and toy and between him and my grandfather I think that's where I got my love of trains. In the past few weeks instead of focusing on all that was going on we would talk about my hunt for the old Life-Like mountain paper or Skyline buildings or if I ever got that Hiawatha set or the groundhog tearing up my garden or anything else really. I think he enjoyed the normalcy of just talking about anything but the cancer and just treating him like it was a normal day and not focusing on the elephant in the room like a lot of people around him would. One thing he really enjoyed was that restoration show on Discovery, he actually remembered a lot of the things they worked on from back in the day and couldn't believe what some of them were worth now.

Not sure how soon I'll be back here regularly but I may post a little, but now comes the task of clearing out his house and settling his affairs but the good Lord willing and the creek don't rise I'll be back soon.
