The LCCA Module Committee has met on a weekly basis to define standards for a module layout system. Our committee includes several club members and Lionel representatives. Through a continuous, thoughtful process, albeit with some trial and error inherent in any new venture, we have moved this project forward. Much of our work has been completed, and we are now very close to achieving our goal of defining specifications for a new module system. As a result, any Lionel enthusiast will be able to participate in this modular layout project.

Prototypes for the new system will be on display and in operation at our annual LCCA Convention in Norfolk, VA July 23-29. In fact, a club member at that event will take home a completed module section via a raffle or silent auction. LCCA intends to make this transportable modular layout available for enjoyment at designated Special Events and other venues.

The committee will publish a set of standards as a guide to club members that want to build their own modules. We hope that Lionel will be able to offer a kit that would include pre-cut wood pieces, hardware, the correct electricals, and a template that would properly position the track and hardware for proper mating with other modules.

The ultimate goal for this modular layout system would be to encourage members all around the country to make a module according to specifications or assemble one from a kit. Members in the vicinity of designated Special Events or Train Meets could bring their modules along, gather at the site, and place them end-to-end along with others for an operating session. These ad hoc modular layouts would likely be an attraction to all event visitors. Initially, the club might have to send enough corners so that a layout could be completed as a square or rectangle.  Later, more exotic patterns could be created. By this method, LCCA would not transport one large club layout around the country and would avoid concerns for logistics and costs.

Both LCCA and Lionel are committed to this project. We believe it will offer Lionel fans a way to join fellow enthusiasts in operating a large and expandable O-gauge layout. This new system is being designed so that a module can be easily transported in the average-size car, yet quickly and easily assembled and mated to other modules to produce a variety of layout configurations that would fit the available space at future Convention and other sites. The post-convention October issue of  our club publication The Lion Roars will  contain details and photos.  Go to wwwlionelcollectors.org for more information regarding the LCCA and our 42nd Annual Convention in Norfolk, VA.

I believe once folks see the modular railroad pieces in action, they are going to want to build their own modules so they can join in the fun and get to run on a really BIG layout.

For a lot of us, running on a modular layout is they only practical way we can run long trains and big steam. Really looking forward to seeing the first modular layout in Norfolk!

I had hoped our Glancy modules and the LCCA would be compatible, but it appears they are going another direction.

I think this will be a fantastic outreach opportunity for the hobby and those that do not have large layouts.

Charlie,

We received design input from the Glancey Group and other modular train groups all around the country.   Our committee reviewed and seriously considered your proposal, but decided to go in a different direction.   Thank you to the Glancey group and other groups for your design input.  We really received a lot of good input and several design concepts with each having their own unique merits.

We at the LCCA are very excited about launching this project alongside Lionel in Norfolk VA this July.  We are in discussions and hope to introduce this modular layout to people in various cities all around the country.  We believe this will help promote the hobby and introduce the magic of Lionel trains to several thousand people within the next year or so.

Hi Al, I think the club is doing something that will be a big pluss for everyone. It will be really cool to see a large display layout and knowing they are from the same club as you.

Who knows, the LCCA modular could be the Lionel display at places like York. I think this would be a good thing for Lionel. As for the general public I bet they would love to have the operators to talk to them about starter set tips as well as product information. I know that most LCCA members would love to spend a day or two running trains and talking to alot of folks about why and how we do what we do.

I wish you all the luck in the world with this project, it sounds like it's going to be a "blast".

Mario,

Yes, Lionel representatives are on our committee and very much involved with the design concept review and direction the LCCA is taking with this Fastrack modular layout.   We appreciate Lionel's support and we look forward to introducing the magic of Lionel Trains to thousands of people in the upcoming year.  It is going to be a blast!   Things are moving very fast and furious (in a good way)  with the LCCA.  We hope to see you in Norfolk July 23-29 at the Marriott Waterside hotel in Norfolk VA.
