I have a question. What does lionel sell right now to run their legacy engines they are selling. I am confused. Let put a different way. If I was new to the hobby and I wanted to buy a couple of lionel legacy engines what would be available at a lionel dealer to run these beautiful engines. I would want something new that would allow me to use all those neat features. I am looking at those high end engines not any of the lion chief stuff. Right I have tmcc and cab1L and cab1L base but before I order two thousand dollar engine I want to make sure this company even has a up to date control system in their inventory. I don't want to spend big bucks on engines then not have an up to date operating system. The new technology makes the hobby a lot more interesting but seems like lionel is building without a dependable operating system. Kinda like they got the cart before the horse 🐎.

The new technology is actually around 15 years old .  Lionel (like many companies) had plans to replace the Legacy remote and command base with new devices, but the pandemic and supply chain problems sabotaged the timely arrival and possibility of continued production of existing equipment.  The Base 3 is now close to two years later than they hoped for, and is expected this summer.  Basic functions are currently available via the Universal Remote and most functions through the smart device app.  If you want a handheld remote that addresses all Legacy functions, unfortunately you will need to wait for the Base 3 and purchase a cab-2 Legacy handheld on the secondary market.
