I have a Lionel Legacy 39624  NS/Erie SD70ACe which - all of a sudden - starts up by itself without receiving a command from the Legacy base. it appears it wants to start up in conventional although it does not move with 18 volts from a Lionel brick.

It will not reprogram since it starts up immediately. It was already programmed and ran fine for several years. All of a sudden it just fires up when I turn on Track 1 which is my track power number for my layout on the Legacy remote.

Any ideas or suggestions to fix problem is appreciated.

It usually means its not seeing a signal. Not usually a problem with plastic shell diesels but might be worth removing the shell and reseating the connectors. Try running it without the shell on. Depending on when it was made the radio board may have to be reseated as well. Its the small 1” x 1”  board in the middle of the RCMC. Later engines had these boards soldered in place.

Before trying Petes suggestions, there are some easier checks you could try first.

Are you powering the track and the Legacy system at the same time?

If so, try powering the Legacy base first, then the track. Sometimes the electricity can beat the legacy signal to the track.

If its not taking off its at least seeing one side of the signal. If it was dropping into full conventional mode it would take off at full speed.

Have you changed the way the base is plugged in.I.E. Is it plugged into a powerstrip? If this is the case try plugging it directly into the wall. Power strips have been known to degrade the Legacy system on occassion.
