Getting ready to buy my first Legacy engine. Will be buying at the least a base to add to my DCS. After some reading I'm wondering if I would not be better off with the base/remote combo for "just in case".

Can I get comments on Legacy vice TMCC, I've read that their are features on Legacy engines that cannot be accessed through either Cab 1 or with the DCS remote.

What do I get going with the Cab 2, that I will miss on Cab 1?

With the Cab-2 system you will get the ability to access quilling whistles and a few other things that I as a regular TMCC user am not aware of. The Legacy base also has a display screen which can make things easier. If you are going to continue to build your Legacy fleet and add more new equipment then I would suggest Legacy.

I only stick to TMCC because I don't have the money to buy new equipment and RailSounds 4 and 5 engines are enough for me. This means that none of my engines have any of the Legacy exclusive features so between the extra money I would need to spend to upgrade and the fact that I find the Cab-1 remote to be less confusing I stick to TMCC. Hope this helps and I wish you luck!

If you are getting a Legacy engine, I would get the Legacy 990 system to go with it so you can take advantage of all the features you are paying for in the engine. I don't think it is great deal more $$$ than the Cab1L/Base1L set. I am guessing this will probably not be your last Legacy engine or Legacy device either, might as well get the most out of it all.

I have both DCS and Legacy. I got the cable to connect DCS to Legacy, but after getting it all set up I haven't yet found the need to connect the two. I run MTH with DCS and Lionel with Legacy and I like both systems, adds a little variety and you can easily run two trains without having to switch from engine to engine. Also adds another remote for guests to use.

Frank,

JD is giving you good advise, if you are going to expand your Legacy engine line down the road, you might as well purchase the full Legacy 990 base with the Cab2 Hand Held remote Control.  Of course this all comes down to what you know you can afford, If you can afford the Legacy Engines you can afford the Legacy 990 Base Unit also.  In my case I purchased the Legacy 990 Base before I had a Legacy Engine.  I never did own a TMCC base unit at all.  I simply added the Legacy package to my DCS layout, and it works like a dream, connected to my DCS TIU.  IMO having both DCS & Legacy is the best way to run a layout.  I agree 100% with RTR2, having both the Legacy Cab2 and the DCS Hand Held Remote control gives the layout a big time variety of control, especially with the wireless FasTrack Command Control Switches, that operate directly from the Legacy Cab2, IMO one of the biggest upgrades in remote control train operation ever.  As RTR says you can operate a lot more than just one train set up in this manner, most times there are 4 or 5 trains under DCS/Legacy control, a P2 Street Car and a  Conventional Bumper Car all running on the multi level DCS/Legacy Layout all at the same time, some even on the same tracks.

never heard of any place just selling the base.

legacy is upgraded TMCC.

the Lionel command system is "Train Master Command Control"

you will miss nothing using the cab2 as the cab1 does not do what the cab2 does. but the cab2 does everything the cab1 does.
