I have some light towers with lamps in a shade (see picture). I can not grab the bulbs with my fingers. I tried needle nose pliers but the bulbs did not like them. Any suggestions on how to change light bulbs?

Try something sticky like a one inch piece of double sided tape which would be sticky to the bulb glass and your finger.

Cross locking tweezers.

gvtif, the double sided tape works because I have used on several occasions on exactly the same lamps you have.
Rubber hose or tubing a little smaller then the bulb. Should give enough grip to pop it out.
A little squirt of light oil on the socket might help loosen things up.
Since the bulbs are broken out maybe the eraser end of a pencil. It should have some grip and something for you to turn.
What Franktrain said. I use a small piece of heat shrink tubing to remove lights like that. If it is really stuck, use a piece of heat shrink slightly bigger than the lamp, put the heat shrink over the lamp and then apply some heat (heat gun or blow dryer). Let it shrink over the bulb and then turn.
Thanks all for the ideas
I really like these Marx lights & have many.
Tweezers with cloth (or liquid or regular plastic) electrical tape on the ends for bulb removal, then a tiny bit of green Scotchbrite scrubby pad wrapped around a drill bit for cleaning the socket, then some dielectric bulb grease from the auto parts store, will condition these to last another 50 years.

The high cost and poor reliability of bulbs lead me to convert all of the light towers on my railroad to LEDs. Here is how:

I'm with Bobby Ogage and converted my MTH Flood Towers into LEDs. It was relatively painless. I plugged the LEDs into the existing sockets and added resistors. I powered the towers with 12 VDC.
