Does anyone know what type of paper American Flyer used to diffuse the light in passenger cars? Has anyone used just regular paper or is this a fire hazard?
The little bit of paper you'd use for diffusing light can't be a big deal as far as a fire hazard. While you're in there, consider LED lighting, that will greatly reduce the heat inside, and probably eliminate the need to diffuse the light.
I used parchment paper on one of my projects. The off-white looked nice, and since it is used for cooking no worries about the heat. Plus, it is carried at your local grocery.
The Gilbert passenger cars use a single bulb in the center of the car. One layer of paper is inserted in the entire car. A second layer is inserted in the center 25% of the car. The paper shown below is a match for the original paper used by Gilbert. It is PRO-0220-03.
