I have two Rugged Rails F3 A Units that I run as pair. One A Unit has PS2, and the other is not powered. The A Unit with PS2 has an electrical receptacle with 4 pins under the rear coupler. The non-powered unit has no lighting, no corresponding electrical plug and manually operating couplers.

My project is to illuminate the headlight and cab in the non-powered unit so the lighting is directional when connected to the A Unit with PS2.

Can the 4-pin receptacle on the A Unit with PS2 provide the directional lighting?

Is there a wiring diagram that defines the electrical functions of the 4 pins?

Besides MTH, where can I buy the cable assembly with a male plug that fits the 4-pin receptacle?

The four pin tether is probably the standard one that is used for a lot of PS/1 locomotives, so anyone that has done some upgrades should have a few laying around.

Since the A-Unit has no active connection to the tether, you can simply disconnect it from where it is and task it to anything you like.  You could have an electrocoupler and directional lighting with that tether, and chances are it's already wired for them.  If not, it's pretty easy to do that.

Bobby, You can look at the upgrade manual for a diesel to get the pin out.  You need to see what wires the 4 pin connector is attached to if any.

The lights and couplers run off the Purple Positive voltage.  So you can send over the PV and then 3 control wires.  One for rear coupler, one for reverse light, then one for CAB or just use 2 bulbs off the reverse light.  That way when in reverse the headlight and cab light will turn on in the dummy.  The coupler and lights share the PV as one leg.   G
