Anyone else observed a wheezing sound from the fan driven smoke unit? I have the Union Pacific Hudson, bought it new. Runs and smokes fine. I noticed a high pitcged wheezing like sound when the fan activates to blow a puff of smoke. I assume it is the fan unit but would think it should be silent. It's not consistent, but is loud enough to hear over the chuff sounds.
Thoughts?

It's the fan motor. I would contact Lionel for a repair authorization and send it back after the holidays.
When you are out of the warranty period, a few small drops of oil may silence it.
The small fan motors are tough to build perfectly every time. It's common for there to be some noisy motors that work correctly.
They're easy to replace if the engine is out of warranty.

Would like to know what you found out, My GP20 does the same thing and it is so loud you hear it over the diesel revving. But it does not do it always??
Replace the fan motor.
I also have a LionChief Plus and if the noise goes away at high speeds, should i still replace the fan motor? Do you just put a drop of oil on the top of the fan or do you pull the fan off of the motor and oil lower.

I pulled off the fan, put a drop of oil at the base of the “post” the fan goes on, no more noise.
that fix will work for a little while but you should have replaced the motor they only cost $6.00 plus shipping!
