does anybody have one of these? this one didn't smoke worth a crap out of the box, so i tore it apart, replaced the wick, and that really didn't help. so i took off the wick material that covered the heating element, and now it works great! anyone else do that? if you have, how has the heating element held up?

I do not have the "Valley Flyer" version like yours, but:
Interesting; I love these things; I have 3 (of various modern, can-motor vintages and road names), and all 3 seem/seemed to smoke quite adequately. I have converted one to Cruise Commander, and re-lettered it for the M&O. Smokes well.
But, good info to know in case I "have to have" another one.
Still waiting for the Command version from Lionel.
How much smoke fluid did you put in it at the start? I'm just wondering if it needs a lot of fluid to soak through a new wick.
