I remember when those were available. Not a very professional weather job. Looks like all that was done was some Testors flat black sprayed on the botched silver job of the original release. Ohhh I was soooo mad when those came out. It should have been Dark Gunmetal paint. I stripped all the trim off and glass beaded the loco and tender and repainted in the dark Gray and relettered....THEN Lionel does the same thing!
Aside from the 'correct' dark gray model you mentioned, they also produced a bright red and a deep sky blue version. The wireless tether came into a couple of these I think and some other improvements.

It would be nice if Lionel eventually re issued them with modern mechanics and electrics. Our original model had a great sounding whistle for 1996...

Dont forget about this one...

I don't think I will ever be able to forget this one.

That would be one I'd try my very best to forget.

Since I havent been in o gauge trains as long as you guys what was that one called? The Fire Island Special? Roll Eyes

Just when you think you've seen it all

The one to have is the one I bought, the gunmetal gray 18063, second issued of the group. I never see this version for sale in auctions, eBay, or TCA book. I think people who have them appreciate that particular version as the best one and we hang onto them. It is not a stong pulling engine and struggles to pule a modest passenger train of pullmans, the smoke is obsolete and weak, but the TMCC RS system is still a good one.

If Lionel ever re-issues this engine in gray we are hosed for future value!

Not sure but seems I read somewhere that No 5344 was used for the original CV Hudson???

Also - the photo I posted is NOT copywriten by me. I inadvertently got the mark on when posting to the J&S Studio site!

AS for the Psychedelic one kid of wish I had one Smile

Chris, I have the same one and I love it! The whistle is by far the best ever by Lionel. After a long break in (about 3 years) she has loosened up and has no problem pulling all 10 of the heavyweights made to go with her. That one lonely chuff is sad compared to RS5 but rest of the sounds are OK and there's that whistle...OH BABY... I like that whistle!!!

I seem to remember that when Neil took the psychedelic one on the Horde tour there was at least one more made and possibly raffled off...imagine what that's worth!!
He also brought that layout to York and set it up with an awesome sound system. Anyone remember that??
I have the light silver one, and I've always had mixed feelings about it. Some days I like it, and some days I want it repainted. The whistle is fabulous. I'd like to know what others have found about not just its pulling power but the speed it can achieve. I find that it really never gets up a good head of steam, and it seem as though its not able to get out of 1st gear.

A friend of mine had the silver version, and liked it a lot. But he traded it when he heard about the black/dark gray version, #18063. He's been a lot more happy with the black version, 'cause he likes the CrewTalk and TowerCom, as well as Wireless Tether and Electrocoupler, that the silver one lacked. He also says the black one pulls a little better and smokes a little better.

I also have the silver one and have found it to be a poor runner and puller. The whistle however, like yours, is excellent. I run it from time to time but not for very long. I wish I had the dark one.

Finally found the Black/Gunmetal #18063 sealed in the box. Won it at a private auction. Not bad for 400.00! According to a recent guide, less then 600 were made. It was uncatalogued in 1999, only a dealer flyer was available. I also just bought the 6 black/gray (including the rare 2 pack) NYC Heavyweights from 1997-1999 to go with this engine. Photos to follow soon.
