Lionel 2-7/8 inch Gauge

I am considering purchasing a reproduction piece of Lionel 2-7/8 inch gauge. Since finding and affording an original piece is almost impossible I am considering a Jim Cohen or MTH reproduction. Considering either a #1000 (Jim Cohen) passenger car or a (MTH )#200 wood gondola. Does anyone know how many were made of either piece? Also does anyone know if Joe Mania is still making reproductions of 2-7/8 inch gauge?
