Sorry, but the earliest PDF Lionel catalogs I've found are from 2009.

Volume 1 or Volume 2?

So the short is I don’t know. The Long is… Last week I was in the Hampton’s for a family reunion, my older brother got a house out there and has been itching to have us all over. As I am a train guy and not a beach guy, I had my sight sets on the Long Island Rail Road museum. Well boy did that pay off for me! I was not sure what to expect, and I only had about 10 minutes to look around, but they had more of a train store than gift shop. (I said long) Ok to my original question I saw on a shelf a very dusty piece of B&O rolling stock. I grabbed it and was very surprised how heavy it was. It’s a stock car of some fashion, and there was something rolling around on the instead. I don’t follow the grade rules for new in box, no scratches. But this thing looks perfect to me. And with a $40 sticker its mine! I wrap it up in a beach towel and put it on top of all the stuff in the car, and hope beyond hope we get home with out incident. So yesterday I unwrap and I want to see what is banging around on the inside of this thing. WOW its 4 bulls! I did not expect that at all. So back to my question, I want to see if the original catalogue to see if the bulls should be mounted instead, there is not a lift off roof, but it seems to me the tray they were original mounted in “should” stay in the car. Just curious if the catalog could enlighten me.
The tray came mounted in the car from the factory. The cows were in the packaging from the factory. It was up to the owner to install them. You might be able to stick the cows in with your fingers, but its easier to take the car apart to add the cows. They just push into the plastic tray and are held in by friction.
The manual in the documents section at the link below tells you how to take the car apart to install them.

Many thanks Bill, the tray is far more study than I expected and is held in on the ends with a little glue/adhesive. It seemed like a this is here for a reason kind of thing!
You're welcome. Yeah, the tray is quite sturdy and is secured by glue/adhesive on the ends. It will flex in the middle a bit if the car is turned upside down once the cows are installed though.
I thought that there was a site that had all of Lionel's catalogs in PDF, a sort of archive? A number of years ago someone had posted about some old catalogs, don't remember what the topic was, but there was a site. I think Peter AKA Putnam Division had posted something on it and I had said something about the 2003-2004 catalogs. Of course with anything, eventually it disappears. I tried looking this morning but no luck.
I went around and found all the catalogs from 2000 onward, I like them as a reference when questions come up about when or what was produced in a given year.
