The Odysey version, with smoke deflectors, issued a few years ago improved upon the 1989 version you describe (except for the simulated coal load).  It has a Pittman motor, traction tires, improved fan driven smoke unit and latest RS.  No chuffing, as per prototype.

While price is important I wouldn't mind paying more for Lionmaster.  Lionmaster was supposed to fill a void for folks that don't have a large layout but want something close to scale.  The problem is if I buy a $1300 Legacy steam engine I can't run it on my layout.  What do all people who have 0-27, 0-31, 0-36, 0-42 and 0-48 buy?  I want Legacy steam with all the features.

Even if it is not Lionmaster I will buy it if it runs on 0-48 - For example I bought the K-4 with whistle steam as soon as I found it ran on 0-48.  It is my son's favorite engine now.

Thanks for the clarification, but I guess my point was this:  In the 2012 and this year’s Signature catalogs Lionel has that line referred to as “Post War Inspired.” They are obviously remakes of various locos and sets and operate conventionally.  So when I see “Post War”  in a description I don’t think of anything with electronics and command control.

I’ve got no interest in this Neil Young line.

It states that the H7 has "Whistle Steam Effect" but the catalog itself says nothing of it.  That's pretty much a deciding factor for me since I have the UP but not the C&O and would get it if the whistle steam effect is indeed a feature.

.

I don't see anywhere its says steam affects . I have to admit I want it but unless I get it real cheap on some sale I am not buying it without steam affects. On another note I figured out how to get the daylight and j to have steam affects the problem is it cost like 200buck  for the parts.

it shouldnt have chuffing anyway, since its turbine driven..should smoke continualy..like id did on my 3rd rail s2..threw one of my smoke units id modified in it..wonder if it would smoke like it,or if i have to modified that unit too?

I agree.  I would like clarification of that before I order.    I thought maybe they meant to say 18 inches.

Well, I decided to have faith in Lionel - I can't see them missing a loco's length by 4 or 5 inches!  So, I left my LHS about an hour ago where I pre-ordered the UP A-A set and the UP City of LA cars, and the Milwaukee Olympian cars.  Minus one of the two baggage cars, that will make a really handsome train!

Sure wish they have a B unit, though.

No Lionmaster engines, but apparently Lionel can justify producing Legacy American Flyer Challengers at the $1000 price point.(!)

There seems to be a lot of demand for Lionmaster engines. The Lionmaster Legacy Big Boy was priced at $900 and didn't seem to stick around very long. I don't know the marketing details like Lionel, of course, but it seems people with modest-sized layouts would be willing to pay the price to have Legacy engines in a size they can actually use.

StationSound diners are gone...

A Texas special with 15" cars? ! really?

Also did somebody say Berkshire Blowout? Cause last years Berks everyone voted down... but you can still by one of these hephalumps in case you changed your mind!

and yes we are happy again to see the the once again but blah-ze scale conventional Mogules... I almost lost my lunch...

Well I love trains, and this will not inhibit me to buy more, I just wish Lionel would wake up and  get off of the couch!

I'm a big fan of Homer Simpson, but I think this photo is even more appropriate

Actually, some of us with modest sized layouts are quite happy to see the new TX SP with its 15" cars...and StationSounds diner.

(Also note that the previous PWC TX SP set with its 15" cars was and still is a red -literally- hot seller)

"Hope Neil Young will remember...Southern man don't need him around anyhow."

Never cared for his music, now I can avoid his trains as well.

I think the Neil Young line is a fantastic concept.  Now, I won't be getting them, since I've gone to almost exclusively scale stuff now, but it really is a great idea.  Legacy operating system, good can motors, aluminum cars and modern features and quality, in a classic look!  It is a great idea!  They still offer the conventional classis and all for those who insist on classic purity, but there are people who wish to run traditional size trains that fit and look well on layouts with tight curves and not a lot of space but want all the bells and whistles.  This is for them.

Well "we" have Neil to thank for setting the standard in realistic sound, as well as the "one wire connection" command system. I'm not sure what Lynyrd Skynyrd has done for O guage but they do have some rock classics.... like Neil. Unfortunately, (for you) if you like tmcc or legacy locos from Lionel......you like Neil

Unless I missed them, I didn't see any operating cars in the catalog. They are usually shown after the regular freight car line. I need to find some operating hoppers to use with the new LCCA coal ramp I saw in Charlotte. Otherwise, as I mentioned on this forum already, just some boxcars from this catalog so far. If someone is breaking up the NYC Mohawk freight set, I want the B&M diecast hopper.

Huh? Lionel's RailSounds was introduced in 1990, years before MTH trains even existed. In any case, Lionel introduced the first electronic sounds system - the Sound of Steam - while Mike was barely out of diapers.

Marx was a cool company.  Most of my trains stuff was Marx when I was a kid, 'cause me parents were on a budget.  Yeah, Lionel, particularly Lionel Warbonnet F3s, were the toy train back then, but we had Marx, and I loved 'em.  Still have a few of my early 50s pieces, and my Dad's entire 1930s wind up set from when he was a kid.

Great company!
