I will be ordering a few things, depending on the amount of credit is left on the card.
PRR S2 turbine looking good, a few cars and some aces to fill the roundhouse.
I'd like the scale like S2 turbine even the black version too..hoped they added traction tires on it..the original scale version didnt and it was a lousey puller..hope it got a good smoke unit too..
Their website only shows they have one MTH Challenger.
Call them - they are still advertising Lionmaster Rio Grande & UP Challengers.
I got my UP Challenger from them some months ago, even though the website didn't show it as available.
I wasn't impressed by this catalog. Mostly repeats except the S-2 Turbine. I didn't see anything interesting that I wanted.
Since you asked,I amnot buying anything from Lionel or MTH in 2013.Thanks Lionel and MTH for saving me money again in 2013!
Dan

The Odysey version, with smoke deflectors, issued a few years ago improved upon the 1989 version you describe (except for the simulated coal load). It has a Pittman motor, traction tires, improved fan driven smoke unit and latest RS. No chuffing, as per prototype.
At the Wednesday TCA presentation I did ask about Lionmaster. The issue seems to be the price point between that and the same engine produced in scale. Even though they are shorter it cost almost as much to make because it still has all the same bells and whistles. The idea is still alive but they can't get past the price hurdle. I did throw in another plug today at the Lionel booth...Jim
While price is important I wouldn't mind paying more for Lionmaster. Lionmaster was supposed to fill a void for folks that don't have a large layout but want something close to scale. The problem is if I buy a $1300 Legacy steam engine I can't run it on my layout. What do all people who have 0-27, 0-31, 0-36, 0-42 and 0-48 buy? I want Legacy steam with all the features.
Even if it is not Lionmaster I will buy it if it runs on 0-48 - For example I bought the K-4 with whistle steam as soon as I found it ran on 0-48. It is my son's favorite engine now.
The PWC series engines weren't conventional. They had TMCC and RailSounds electronics in them, with electrocouplers, directional lighting, etc. Very different from the CC series.
Thanks for the clarification, but I guess my point was this: In the 2012 and this year’s Signature catalogs Lionel has that line referred to as “Post War Inspired.” They are obviously remakes of various locos and sets and operate conventionally. So when I see “Post War” in a description I don’t think of anything with electronics and command control.
I’ve got no interest in this Neil Young line.
I like the E8/E9 sets providing the 13 inch length of the engine is a typo. I believe it should be 17.5 inches long

I agree. I would like clarification of that before I order. I thought maybe they meant to say 18 inches.
Correct me if I am wrong, Lionel, but on the HTML index
http://www.lionel.com/products...FA3A&PageID=2119
It states that the H7 has "Whistle Steam Effect" but the catalog itself says nothing of it. That's pretty much a deciding factor for me since I have the UP but not the C&O and would get it if the whistle steam effect is indeed a feature.
I'm interested in knowing more about that infrared sensor track on pg 140.
Anyone hear if its exclusive to fasttrak or when it will be available?
Joe
The 2012 and 2013 Santa Fe Berkshires with the same catalog number have different paint.

it shouldnt have chuffing anyway, since its turbine driven..should smoke continualy..like id did on my 3rd rail s2..threw one of my smoke units id modified in it..wonder if it would smoke like it,or if i have to modified that unit too?

Well, I decided to have faith in Lionel - I can't see them missing a loco's length by 4 or 5 inches! So, I left my LHS about an hour ago where I pre-ordered the UP A-A set and the UP City of LA cars, and the Milwaukee Olympian cars. Minus one of the two baggage cars, that will make a really handsome train!
Sure wish they have a B unit, though.

No Lionmaster engines, but apparently Lionel can justify producing Legacy American Flyer Challengers at the $1000 price point.(!)
There seems to be a lot of demand for Lionmaster engines. The Lionmaster Legacy Big Boy was priced at $900 and didn't seem to stick around very long. I don't know the marketing details like Lionel, of course, but it seems people with modest-sized layouts would be willing to pay the price to have Legacy engines in a size they can actually use.

Don't know about production time but Jon Z said kits would be available for use with other types of track.
I just ordered the first six military box cars from Charlie. Supposed to be released in June....hemmmmm will see. The other 12 are spread out until Feb 2014. I know 18 new cars...wishful thinking on my part, but half will be nice.

No vision line engines, cars, or features?! WHAT?!
No engines with smoke features?!
StationSound diners are gone...
A Texas special with 15" cars? ! really?
Also did somebody say Berkshire Blowout? Cause last years Berks everyone voted down... but you can still by one of these hephalumps in case you changed your mind!
and yes we are happy again to see the the once again but blah-ze scale conventional Mogules... I almost lost my lunch...
Well I love trains, and this will not inhibit me to buy more, I just wish Lionel would wake up and get off of the couch!
I'm a big fan of Homer Simpson, but I think this photo is even more appropriate

Actually, some of us with modest sized layouts are quite happy to see the new TX SP with its 15" cars...and StationSounds diner.
(Also note that the previous PWC TX SP set with its 15" cars was and still is a red -literally- hot seller)
I do believe that Lionel has a NS Reading Heritage unit with my name of it!

+2.
"Hope Neil Young will remember...Southern man don't need him around anyhow."
Never cared for his music, now I can avoid his trains as well.
I think the Neil Young line is a fantastic concept. Now, I won't be getting them, since I've gone to almost exclusively scale stuff now, but it really is a great idea. Legacy operating system, good can motors, aluminum cars and modern features and quality, in a classic look! It is a great idea! They still offer the conventional classis and all for those who insist on classic purity, but there are people who wish to run traditional size trains that fit and look well on layouts with tight curves and not a lot of space but want all the bells and whistles. This is for them.
+2.

Well "we" have Neil to thank for setting the standard in realistic sound, as well as the "one wire connection" command system. I'm not sure what Lynyrd Skynyrd has done for O guage but they do have some rock classics.... like Neil. Unfortunately, (for you) if you like tmcc or legacy locos from Lionel......you like Neil
I am considering ordering the following:
PRR MOW pickup truck
B&O GP7
B&O SD-40
Legacy cab1L
B&O capital limited cars

I like Neil Young ,when he was with Crosby Stills Nash, and Crazy horse..But can't blame Lynyrd Skynyrd hating Neil young do to his song southern man..There fire back song to Neil was sweet Home Alabama...Neil is a controversial man..As for sound you thank Mike wolf=mth to start the sound revolution in trains
I had a discussion with one of the Lionel marketing folks about the 13" length listed in the catalog for the E8/9s. He said that that is a mistake. He also said that they are approximately 17" long.
Marsrover, thank you!
Huh? Lionel's RailSounds was introduced in 1990, years before MTH trains even existed. In any case, Lionel introduced the first electronic sounds system - the Sound of Steam - while Mike was barely out of diapers.
Just heard from Neil about your statement. He's devastated.
And of course Marx had the first electronic steam sound (Sound O' Power I think it was called) in 1969.
You're right. Incidently, Marx was also the first company to make a steam engine with smoking steam cylinders.
Pretty remarkable achievements from this company.
Absolutely. Just because Marx was the low-price leader, doesn't mean they didn't come up with an advancement now and then.
Haven't decided yet. But even if I was buying nothing I wouldn't be whining here about it.
Marx was a cool company. Most of my trains stuff was Marx when I was a kid, 'cause me parents were on a budget. Yeah, Lionel, particularly Lionel Warbonnet F3s, were the toy train back then, but we had Marx, and I loved 'em. Still have a few of my early 50s pieces, and my Dad's entire 1930s wind up set from when he was a kid.
Great company!
