I commented on spring tension / winding. If Chuck Sartor made a comment too, I missed it.

I've had a lot of them (smoke bulb turbines) on my bench. And I looked over a 1946 chassis that I had in one of my parts drawers before I commented.

If there is too much pressure on the flapper you can have two issues:
cam wear - it's only fiberboard
uneven running.

I had a 1946 turbine with a smoke unit conversion kit installed (one of the few I've seen). This turbine had both the 2026-44 piston spring, and the spring on the side of the smoke lever.  At low speeds the locomotive would bind and slow a bit each time the pin on the back of the drive wheel lifted the smoke lever. I resolved the problem by removing one of the springs.

I just got a lionel 2020 and it runs great..after a little clean up and the tender works well.   I am not famaliar with this engine...so does it smoke? I see that it has a large lamp for the headlight but not sure if I am suppose to drop in tablets or smoke oil...it doesn't have anything to 'puff' the smoke so maybe it doesn't have this feature.  Can anyone explain?

Thanks

Ron

The 2020 is a version of the Pennsylvania 6200, S2 Turbine, the real unit did not puff smoke it streamed it.

I am pretty sure things are installed correctly.   Winding the spring around twice to increase it tension doesn't look to easy but I didn't try..yet.   C.W. above mentioned he didn't do this and gravity helps.  So, this is what I see with mine...the flapper will push up but doesn't fall back down.  I use a little tool to push it down and up...it moves freely but definitely not free enough for gravity and the spring (as is) to drop it back down.    I loosened the screw just a little and it still is not freely falling back down.  I installed the cam first..next to the frame then the metal flapper and then the spring....this is correct...right?   I know you guys have tried to help...so thank you...it has been fun and interesting for  me learn from you guys.  But, if you have one last word of wisdom, please pass it along.

Thanks again to a nice group of folks!!

Ron
