If they leave China now, there is no way they will get here by the end of the year, due to shipping and receiving time right?

Unless Lionel ships via air freight, that's probably a healthy assumption.  If you look over on the Atlas-O website, there's often a 6- to 8-week period between a container shipment out of China and Atlas-O shipping to dealers.  Then add another week (sometimes less, sometimes more) for dealers to ship to their customers.

So when we hear these are "shipping soon", it's touch-and-go if you'll see them in your hands this year -- especially if shipped by sea.  You'd feel better if they already shipped in mid-October.  Just sayin'.

It seems with BTO items these days I always have to make "Healthy Assumptions" like what happened with the Lionel F40PH..........

Every year there's always SOMETHING that folks are wondering whether their special product will arrive by year's end....

For me, it's the Atlas-O 53' CSX containers I pre-ordered, and even put down a deposit for with Charlie Ro (since they were considered "special order").     Then again, if I had to put a deposit down somewhere, I know Charlie is good for it.    And with the latest info posted on the Atlas Model Railroading website (as opposed to the Atlas-O website), it appears my long awaited containers "should" arrive -- maybe even in my own hands -- by year's end.

For most folks, it seems these 21" Lionel passengers are the things they're waiting for with bated breath.  For your collective sakes, I hope Lionel would just step up and tell you where the product IS right now.  You'd think SOMEBODY there must know!

After all, this ain't rocket science.  We can all do the math.  It's Nov 12th today -- basically 6 weeks left in 2017.  If they ain't "on the water" yet (and Lionel is using the usual shipping option for them), then these jewels aren't gonna make it in time.  But FWIW, Charlie Ro's website is still showing a 12/20/2017 arrival.

So keep hoping.

@Dave Olson and @Conrail6358

will yield a quicker response but both were at Trainfest in Milwaukee so it is uncertain if they will respond soon.  Ryan did say on the Facebook post from Milwaukee on Friday they are in production and should  see them by years end. Sounds like they may come by air possibly but Ryan could answer for sure.

The emphasis on should was mine.  If they are coming on a boat then most likely as David pointed out they would probably be later.

Charles Ro has changed their dates on the UP cars to April 10, 2018.

Wow!!!  Very strange.  In less than a month's time, we've gone from "these should be leaving China soon" to Lionel's largest dealer showing April 2018 dates.

Looks like all the passenger cars are set back till spring 2018 according to Charles Ro website. ...

Well not quite ALL the 21" cars were pushed out to Spring 2018.  Looks like the Amtrak set, SP Daylight set, and NYC ESE add-ons are still showing 12/10/2017.  The other passenger cars are now showing next year though.

Depending on your outlook, a little bit of delivery staggering could be easier on the wallet for those folks who pre-ordered different sets.  I guess there's only so much stuff that Lionel's Chinese factory can produce at any given point in time.

Nonetheless, I wonder why there seems to be so many mixed messages coming out of Lionel Stateside on this stuff.  Somewhat puzzling, but not completely out of character.

The shipments were split into separate containers so that some of the skus could get here while the other cars are still in production. It was planned to have them all make the year, but that isn't possible now unfortunately.

I believe the roads that will make it here for the year are Penn Central and Southern Pacific. The others will be 1st Quarter 2018.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

At York Ryan Kunkle told me that the Amtrak cars are also in this same container as well. Is this true?

Yes, that's the third one. Sorry about that. Those are the three that will make the year.

If Lionel starts shipping quality, I will ask Dean and Dave to take down the target in their offices with my face on it.

I will never take that down.

Thanks for the clarification Dave Olson!
