Lionel 3rd rail e8 ,need advise please

Hello everybody,

I am considering buying a third rail E8 diesel engine with Lionel Electronics I believe. I would like to know what you think of these engines and whether I should possibly consider one. I just bought the Lionel E8 Wabash produced in 2013 and I think it is great. How would you compare the third rail E8 to the Lionel? Wll iit be better to just stick to the new Legacy like the New York Central that will be coming out or should I consider purchase of this one. Thank you very much for your advice period as usual it is great.

Well, the 3rd Rail one will look great, but I have to give the nod to the Legacy electronics and sound quality. The 3rd Rail products use ERR Cruise Commanders and ERR RailSounds Commanders. They're very nice, but they're not Legacy.

Unless you're going to reserve one from the 2nd run of 3rd Rail E8s, you probably won't be able to get one anyway.

If you already have Legacy and want to run them together, stick with the Legacy. If you are going to run it by itself and want a specific road name, get a 3rd Rail.

Since you already have a Lionel unit, that may be your best option. However, the Lionel nose is incorrect and it sits high. That is if you care about those things. I realize not everyone does. The 3rd Rail unit while not having Legacy, will be a scale model that has excellent running capabilities. I believe the 2nd Run is on Standby status only, but you will be seeing pictures within the week of the 1st run production models.

The key is that you cannot mate a Lionel unit with a 3rd Rail unit. They have completely different gearing ratios.
