Hi all:

I bought a 445 tower yesterday. After testing it, I found the man on the stairway doesn't want to descend the stairs when power is applied. I checked the hole in the building side to see if it was grooved, but it is not. Does the bracket upon which he slides require some kind of lubrication? I have photos of it as well as video of how it behaves. The second video shows slip in how he rides the stairs. Should that be tighter or adjusted? Thanks in advance.

First, check the linkages and make sure they're not rubbing or getting hung up. My own has a piece of 14 gauge wire holding the armature to the solenoid - ugly, but it works. If that checks okay, the next thing to do is use contact cleaner in the solenoid and plunger, and disassemble as much as you can of the stairs (the roof/vestibule will come off fairly easily since it's usually not glued on) and clean the groove and the metal slide. I don't advise using grease or oil to help with the action. Maybe, MAYBE just a touch of Dri-Slide (a clear silicon spray) and wipe afterwards. Hope this helps, it's a cute accessory that kids love to watch.

I'll second the recommendation not to lube the stairway area.

I would consider gently tweaking the bend in the bracket the man rides on.  If it is too tight to the stairway, he would not slide easily.  You should be able to check by manually moving the armature to the "back" position and seeing if you can make him move up and down by letting the string in and out manually.

They are tricky to get going right. I have smoothed the top front edge on the steps plus the channel along the steps by the building. I have used a little silicone on the steps but, periodically, I manually slide the man up and down the steps. also, I second the suggestion about bending the metal bracket so it rides on the steps. I used kite string on one I fixed and it works pretty good.
