I would try a TMCC reset on the locomotive first (instructions here) to see if that clears things up. If that doesn't work, remove the boiler and check that the antenna wire is attached to the motherboard. If so, try reseating the R2LC board (this is the TMCC radio receiver board). If the problems persist, you can swap the R2LC board with any other TMCC-equipped locomotive to test to see if the board itself failed. Once you swap boards, program the locomotive (assign and ID# and set the railsounds feature code) and test to see if it functions normally. Swap boards again to confirm the original board was the problem; if so replacements are available from Lionel for about $30, but I know other forum members sell them too.

If the problem persists it could be a dead spot on your layout, which could be confirmed with another TMCC-equipped locomotive. If not, then a trip to a service center may be warranted; reports from other forum members suggest Lionel is not accepting out of warranty repairs at its customer service facility at this time.

lionel started to take out of warrenty engins back again but repair cost were increased to 100 from 60

Somehow after I reset the engine back to factory specs its working properly, when I use a command base. I haven't had time to try it with the legacy controller yet.
