hi group  - i have found a Lionel 6-52175 Allied Models Special Department 56 Steam Locomotive- it runs great with just a transformer - smoke, horn, bell, direction all good - then i noticed it has ability for command control - so i set the engine on track, switch is set to "Program", powered track, lights on front rear and engine box were lite, no sounds,  set an engine number on my cab2 remote to 60 and pressed "set" - no horn or sound - took engine off track and put back to "run" and tested it on track with just transformer power and the engine worked fine, with sounds from horn, bell.

My question is why won't the engine program?  i also tried resetting using the Aux 1 and 34 numbered keys with no progress  when the unit is on the track-in program mode-the front and rear lights are on and the smoke unit is working.  but i cannot program or use my remote.

wondering if there was something special for this unit

THANKS in advance for any help you can provide

As sold, they are not equipped w/ command control, they are TMCC upgradable with the kit that Lionel offered. I have one of these locos and did the TMCC upgrade.  I'm fairly certain these locos also came with Signal Sounds (bell and whistle only) and could also be upgraded to full Railsounds, will have to double check on this.

The "kit" us usually just the boards to upgrade to command and also full Railsounds.  Right now I think they have just Signal Sounds ad Ed describes.  The kits are long gone, but you can buy the individual parts to do the upgrade at the 1/2 price parts sale right now.  For the three boards, you'll be out about $75 with shipping from Lionel.

You'll need the R2LC-C08 TMCC Receiver.

You'll also need the generic Railsounds Power Supply

The Generic Steam would probably be a decent choice for the sound as it isn't cab specific.

How had is it to do the upgrade? I've never taken any of my locos apart. Is it pretty much remove shell; pull something out and replace with these boards.

@gunrunnerjohn - Are the boards you show in your post all that's needed?

Typically, all you need is the boards I posted, but the specific product number would be useful to make sure of our facts.
