Just received mine today. Interesting to note that both cars have separate Lionel catalog numbers as follows:

6-83155 - Smithsonian Flight Boxcar

6-83156 - Smithsonian Space Boxcar

But when packaged together they have the following Lionel catalog number:

6-83157 - Smithsonian Air & Space Boxcar  2-Pack

Another interesting note: If you search the Lionel (or any other place on the web), only the 2-pack shows up. Apparently Lionel is not going to break up the set - although I did find a couple web sites that had pictures of each boxcar separate from the set. The accompanying product info  was for the 2-pack.

What you describe is more common than not on items packaged as sets over the years.  Passenger car sets, multi engine A-B-A sets, etc mostly have followed this pattern.

As you mention, it almost never relates to Lionel listing the item as separate on their site (or catalogs) or selling the items separately.

Just picked up the set today.  I was impressed with the level of detail in the graphics and found these two cars make a nice addition to the other Smithsonian Space boxcar 6-82878.  Hoping they continue adding more cars to this segment of the Smithsonian series.   For a baby boomer space-race person like me, these were a must have.
