I've picked up three of the 21" passenger cars Lionel has put out for the N&W 611 excursion consist over the last couple months. Overall they look pretty nice. The Iowa Pacific dome is pretty much spot on. The FEC car is close enough (should have a smooth roof) and the NP dome is completely the wrong tooling. That being said, the cars are close enough for what I'm doing and probably the best you can get without getting in to brass. My only real complaint with the cars is the spacing. Even with those kinematic couplers there's a pretty big gap. Luckily they'll all soon have Kadees. Enjoy some pics, I haven't run the big dome yet to hear the sounds but I'm excited. 20200216_23022020200218_21013620200216_231627Screenshot_20200218-211602_Snapchat20200218_21014920200218_21022520200218_21034020200218_21034320200216_22571320200218_21023220200218_21030120200218_210337

Thank you for posting. The pictures look great. I worked a 50/50 deal where I get the FEC car and the other fellow gets the NP dome car. I'm waiting on the N&W/B&O Dome two car set. Anyone hear anything about when it will be shipping? FWIW, the last two times my wife and I got to ride behind the 611 were on the FEC car and the B&O Moonlight Dome.

That's a good question. Charles Ro is showing they should've come in last week but haven't. I didn't order that set, but may pick one up (I don't want the B&O dome car). I do have the NS coach 2 pack ordered, but CR is showing a heck of a delay on those! Haha I sure hope that's a typo and not a prediction of factory delays Screen Shot 2020-02-18 at 9.25.23 PM

I'll ask the obvious.  How could there be a gap when the purpose of kinematic coupler is close coupling?  Next absurdity.  Why implement  a system that does clearly not work the way it is supposed to, or is exactly the same as cars without kinematic couplers?

These are easiest cars made to close the gap and still navigate curves under 042".

You just have to drill and tap 4 holes on each end to relocate the coupler.

My UP cars after moving the couplers inboard 1/4".

Thanks for the photos.  Gilly, pretty neat you are able to split the pair--sounds like a win-win.

I wonder if LIONEL offers the six-wheel trucks from the full dome as a separate sale item.  I have a project with a full dome car in the consist and I'd like to be able to use the six-wheel trucks per the prototype.

Will, thanks for posting the images of your set.

Lionel has two dome styles, P-S (Pullman Standard) with the "flat" windows and the Budd style with the contoured windows. Yours looks to be the Budd style, should it be the PS style? I'm not familiar with NP Prototype.

Thanks.

Charlie

For the short vista domes Lionel has a Budd-like design, except the dome itself features flat windows like Pullman cars instead of the round Budd windows. The car seen here is an ACF design like UP used. I understand why they chose it. Northern Pacific Budd domes had slab sides instead of fluting and the dome itself looks better than the flat windows. It would be nice if Lionel would make a proper Budd dome like Atlas.

Understood and thanks Will. The reason why I ask is that I need four Budd Domes, but Lionel does not sell this as a separate sale item and from the pictures posted, looked much closer to what I need rather then the PS domes that I have.

I have been looking for good dome kits and from what I am seeing, these are the best/easiest option out there right now. I will give the up coming O scale March meet one more chance to see what I can find.

I suspect these domes are all we will see in tooling from Lionel (or anyone else) in a while. I did check the Atlas Dome for separate sale and they are not available either.

Thanks again.

Charlie
