Was at a train auction this past weekend and picked up eight of the Lionel modern 6464 re-issue 3-packs. A search on Ebay tells me there were ten of these sets issued, but there also seems to be another one; 6-29282, with paint schemes that were never released in the postwar era. All the other sets have series numbers, 1 thru 10, but this one doesn't. Is it or is it not considered to be part of the same series? Just curious, thanks in advance!

Lionel refers to it as the "6464 Archive 3-Pack Set", so it was not considered a part of the original reissue series, as it represents proposed liveries that never were issued. However. it certainly is an adjunct to the reissue series. The liveries are very cool, in any event.

Actually, there were several of these 6464 “Archive” three-paks released over that time period.
Like I said, I bought 8, and was merely wondering if I had 8 out of 10 or 8 out of 11. Thanks!
While Lionel offered "Archived sets", those supposedly they intended to offer in PW years but never did, and "Variations" which were not on the table in the Post War years, they did offer a few cars that were actually made in the Post War years but not offered as part of the remake series. Those are the red letter 6464-1 Western Pacific and the 6464-300 Solid Shield Rutland. These were offered in a two car set. Both considered very rare in Post War form. 6-39290

I thought this car was the last of the 6464 series reissued cars.
WESTERN PACIFIC 6464-250 BOXCAR
SKU: 6-39236
---When we first reissued our classic series of 6464 boxcars, we overlooked one, the Western Pacific 6464-250, originally cataloged in 1966. Own this new 6464-250 in its original glorious colors. Wrapping up our reissue series with this car seems appropriate since we began this series 48 years ago with another Western Pacific boxcar, 6464-1. Don't miss it!

Great info, thanks!
And this is the rub when attempting to "collect 'em all" as the saying goes. There are always a few cats and dogs to make it confusing.
As noted above the 6464 reissue series was basically Series I-X (Lionel used Roman numerals) consisting of 3 cars per series but as others have posted there are some others to be had.

Ain't that the truth, especially if you want all the "special run 6464 cars" like the
6-52051 TCA 6464095 B&O Sentinel
6-52058 TTOS 64641895 ATSF
There are many others.
I do seem to recall that there have been lists compiled of all of the 6464 cars.
Here is one list. I think its fairly complete. It includes the originals, remakes, variations, club cars. Then there are RGS, Robert Salerno's variations which I don't believe are on this list. All in all the count is well over 150.

The 6464-950 Jersey Central is a real sleeper in my book. Catalogued w/o fanfare. Very nice looking orange and blue livery like the PW FM Trainmaster.
I know I am confusing the issue, and I really don't know if this was mentioned but there are some 6464's that have crossed between different production runs / collections. For example, the NYC 6464-125 is in the 1990's 6464 set, it came in the Conventional classic set, and I think the TCA did a version. I may be wrong but are these considered 3 seperate items 6464 items in this discussion?

If you are just collecting the remakes Series I-X only the 1990s version would be enough but someone collecting all 6464s would want all three as they each have unique markings that make them slightly different. Sounds like the OP is mainly interested in the original ten sets.

So, in a very short time, I went from thinking I had 24 out of 30 or 33 (attainable) to having 24 out of 150 (not so attainable). Just what I needed to know, thanks for sharing all your knowledge. Mike
I also have a bunch of the 6465 cars with the diecast frame. They are nice cars.
The good news Mike is prices on these have plummeted. I have seen three cars sets go for what the price of one car cost originally, sometimes less.
Pete
Agreed! I’ve bought single cars NIB for as low as $20.
