Carl: Great work and documentation as always! Since most of us don't have a milling machine or the expertise to accomplish all your work, have you ever thought of doing these conversions for hire? I know I have the NYC Mikado and the C&A & Blue Comet engines that are dying for these updates. I know I can do the ERR lite conversion, the rest are above my skill-set level.

Will the smaller motor provide enough "oomph" to pull all six cars these sets contain?

Did you consider a reed switch and magnets for the four chuff solution as it might eliminate some work dis-mounting the driver?

They are not available yet. I am told soon though. We were lucky to get some production samples to test. Check with Ken at ERR.

Has anyone ever messed around with one of these?  I have the Erie version. I recently removed all the electronics and was amazed at how smooth the factory can motor ran under conventional DC operation.  Personally, I'm now tempted to try installing DCC in mine and see how it goes.  The only thing I do not know much about is a puffing smoke unit with DCC - I've never tried it.

I have seen CSX Troy's Pacific run on DC power and it floored me how well it ran. It inspired me to go purchase a couple for myself. It is actually amazing how much better it runs. I think a good DCC/Sound decoder would be the way to go.

 

I talked with the folks at TCS and they are going to look into possibly upgrading one of the outputs on the WowSound decoder to be timed with the chuff rate. This would be just a trigger signal which would still require a rectifier and relay between the track and fan driven smoke unit. I believe the QSI Titan and ESU LokSound can already do this.
