I have seen CSX Troy's Pacific run on DC power and it floored me how well it ran. It inspired me to go purchase a couple for myself. It is actually amazing how much better it runs. I think a good DCC/Sound decoder would be the way to go.
I talked with the folks at TCS and they are going to look into possibly upgrading one of the outputs on the WowSound decoder to be timed with the chuff rate. This would be just a trigger signal which would still require a rectifier and relay between the track and fan driven smoke unit. I believe the QSI Titan and ESU LokSound can already do this.
