Has Lionel made a AF S scale GG1 yet? If not why not?

American Models makes a nice one.

I think that American Models makes a nicer one than Lionel would make. AM's first issues had a horn and bell included with a sound system giving off random brake blow-offs and compressor sounds. It also was scale length, articulated nicely and negotiated traditional Flyer curves. Now, recent Lionel issues of Flyer motive power have been nicely proportioned, but would an GG1 be? Those things are L O N G. AM prices the scale DC version at $260, AC at @$280, with sounds (bell an horn) $360. What would Lionel charge?
I bought one of their first ones, and it got me back into S YEARS ago. I've put countless hours on it, and it still runs like new. I've also added directional headlights (useful on a dual cab unit), marker and number board lights. And unlike Lionel, parts are available. And BTW, they're back in stock along with new paint schemes.
Sorry for sounding like a cheerleader for AM, but they make nice stuff.

Yes, AM makes nice stuff. No denying that.
However, I wouldn't shortchange Lionel IF they decided to make a Flyer GG1. Things like the SD70's and Y3's show they can make a accurate scale models if they choose to.
However, you'd probably be looking at $500-$600 minimum for a Flyer GG1 with all the bells and whistles.

I hope Lionel wouldn't waste their time and money tooling up a GG1 when we already have a really nice one in S. It would truly be an answer to a question nobody asked.
I love my AM GG1. It runs great and is a beautiful scale model. Ron Bashista of AM said they were so insistent on the toolmaker getting the carbody shape right that the toolmaker declined further business from AM!

American Models made one.
I don't want Lionel to waste new tooling money on a GG1. I hope that they use tooling money for a new steam locomotive with FlyerChief in 2018. The American Models GG1 is readily available new or used. I have 2 and I plan to sell 1 of them.

Didn't stop them from doing a "new tooling" woodside reefer.

Agreed, BUT...

Aye, there's the rub.... And, as others have said, why waste the tooling money?

Just to add to Rusty's shot of a "single stripe" GG-1, I'll add this pic of my "five-stripe" versions in Tuscan and Brunswick. As others have mentioned, these are among the most accurate and finest running models in my collection. I still run mine with the Flyer compatible couplers.

See Brendan's comment about the wood reefer...
