when Lionel in 2017 remade the 3 truck shay with legacy I was ecstatic! you see I own the original tmcc version sold in 2003 and its 3 cylinder engine assembly's reciprocating assembly sheared the metal pin that holds the entire crankshaft together right where the brass gears are.

so I emailed lionel asking if the 3 cylinder assembly would be the same in the 2017 version and Angela had a tech look at them both and then replied yes it is the same exact one. so I asked once they were released would they be able to sell me that assembly so once again my elk river shay would run she replied and said yes they would.

so a week ago I sent another email asking if the part was available and Angela said yes and gave me the part number to order from so life got in my way but yesterday I called and talked to Katie in customer service and said yes I see the emails and the part number do you wish to order it I said do I need to get an RA# to send my old one back or? the response was no need its the exact one you need do you want me to ship one to you so the part either went last night or will ship today via USPS and a 2 year shelf queen will once again tend to logging duties. some here may have newer bells and whistles with the 2017 version but I have the original and love its whistle and best part I paid way less for the part than the current re-issue cost you.

Engine House Hobbies converted my Lionel WM #6 Shay to Proto2 and it is still going strong.  Louie indicated that your issue was that the geared engines such as the shay,  hesler, or climax need to have light consists and run at a slow speed to protect those moving parts. I limit my two shays (3 and 4 truck), Legacy Hesler, and MTH Climax to no more than 4 cars and 15 smph.

take your shay and turn it upside down now look at the area where the 3 cylinders are notice the brass collars and the metal bracing to hold them in place now look where the brass gears are to connect with the motors drive gears that area is where my reciprocating metal pin failed it has no brass collar to keep it from being flexed that is the real culprit.

and I rarely ran my shay fast but do have 6 log cars that lionel sold in 2003 not huge but I can scale back to 3 cars will see if your advice pays off.
