Good to know it’s in good hands! Like the guys on American Pickers say, if you haven’t seen one before, you gotta have it. Keep us updated.
I’m going to try and get it this weekend and start the clean up and keep as much original as possible should be fun I already have all the accessories and original grass and with some original paint colors to match up!!
Having seen photos of your other work, I think the layout has gone to the right person. Please post lots of photos as you proceed!
Congrats! Looking forward to watching the progress here.
I believe the dark green was the original for this display as I have looked under areas previously under cover. The lighter green is similar to shades used later and from the looks was applied later. The green for the grass areas is faily bright which I have seen in the earlier display layouts. I will get you the paint codes I have mixed at Menards.
Thanks for the updated pics. This is going to be fun watching you bring this back to life!
One of biggest challenges was removing a lot of added grass, paint and glue without destroying the underlying details. SOme heavy duty disc sanding down to original lionel paint and then finer grit. I did find evidence that these earlier layouts were laid out by hand (numerous pencil lines for where road and track would go and single layers of paint for road, grass and railroad) showing early on at least on this one it was not being silk screened on and this may have been due to its size and complexity.

I had fun building a D-190 clone. (Progress was documented on this forum)
What type of connectors were used to extend the switch controller wires on the underside or the board?
Great thread

Joe, if you look at this pic from earlier in the thread, it looks like Lionel simply soldered the extensions and staples them to the board like the rest of the wiring.

Lionel was very cost conscious especially in a loss leader like these “temporary” displays sold at below cost. They would simply staple the wires spread apart and then solder them together. Th bus bars were likely tinplate scrap that saved on wire. Next the wiring will be refreshed and save as much original as possible and the the mountain will be remade and repairs to the plateau walls

Amazing work!
Wow!
I love the progress pictures! Keep them comming. When you are done, any chance of a 3/4 layout picture shot?
So are the hill sides burlap or felt on that vintage of display? I know you have posted details before.....
*** Got it, I see you mentioned felt above.... I'm getting interested in maybe applying those techniques to some slopes on my two level layout....
looks fantastic
I will be detailing the construction technique for the felt mountains and painting in the future
Nice work!

Makes all the "flak"
that you took from a few non appreciated [penny wise yet a Dollar short] Forumites with the purchase of that original D62 Layout boards all the worthwile Eh!
IT should be VERY interesting to see what the "Super O" layout's final bidding win is... and Don't forget to Add 18% plus the fuel and mileage [or truck rental costs]on top of that winning bid.
great job!
Nice work JAGRICK!!!
Wow! That Super O at Stout. My dad used the basics of that design to build our first Christmas layout in 1966.
he added a couple switches, and some more accessories, such as the Milk Platform.... I need to scour old photo albums to see if I can find some pictures.
Very nice work!
How many display layouts have you refurbished? Do you collect them? Resell?
